October Hatch-A-Long

If I didn't have such a touchy, temperamental incubator I would do that too. With my luck it will spike a temp and kill all my chicks!
I hear you... I know what it is like to keep temp low so it won't spike.

Then I bought a $14 thermostat and put it in a $10 styrofoam cooler and it seems to hold temp better than a lot of incubators. I did buy a $10 fan too ; )

Day 22 will be today at 1:30... Two Bo eggs left but since I set them a day after setting the rest of the eggs they actually are just coming up on day 21 .. Did that make sense?? lol... Both have piped so just waiting for them to absorb the yolk and such...

Happy with this hatch ! Removed 2 EE eggs last night as they showed no signs of life, candled when I removed rambunctious chicks and no movement, did an eggtopsy and sure enough, dead, fully formed but were unable to position themselves to pip..

So as of right now the numbers are

EE Chicks..14 out and in the brooder (sold)
Orpington/blue orpington ... 5 out and 2 left.. (mine)

Last hatch of the year and so far I am very happy with the changes I have made... Dry incubation and nearly dry hatching works for me.

Half way done.  3 did not make it, no chick developing.  10 still in the running!

How's the hatch progressing? Any more to add to the count?

Edited to add duh, just realised you probably meant halfway through incubating not hatching. Got hatching on my brain lol

So far, out of 30, I have 24 left. Last night was day 7 candling. Lost three to blood rings, two were never fertile, and one was scrambled from shipping. I have eggs from three locations going right now! First time hatching! So excited!

I hand turn my eggs three times a day. One thing that I have noticed is that the eggs that have a quitter or are clear get cold a lot faster than the eggs with moving chicks. I'm pretty fast when it comes to turning them so it's less than 2 minutes to turn all 19 eggs.

Today I candled the "cold" eggs and all five I think are quitters. I can see the eye but it has never changed position and I do not see any movement. The veins are not pronounced like they are in the eggs with moving chicks either. The eggs just look different and it's hard to put into words.

Two more days and then I'll be marking air cells again.

We have 2 more eggs that pipped. One pipped just a couple hours ago and the other I'm worried about. It pipped, and the membrane has been exposed to the air in the incubator for over a day. I can see the little baby moving but the membrane looks like it is drying out. Its turning yellow and wrinkly. I hope it makes it.

Everyday we have got a new sighting of some pretty cool things. This is our first ever anything with chickens and we have been very lucky. My daughter is ecstatic She has even said that a girl at school wishes she had a barred rock and wants to give her one when they grown up. So sweet.

One egg pipped! I noted that this one was obviously moving a lot at day 7 and had huge veins at day 14. It's a little EE/BR mix. Tiny egg. Jewell's eggs are smaller than medium because she just started laying. 3 more to go. 1 more EE/BR and 2 BR. My 2 youngest (ages 9 and 5) are camped out in front of the incubator. Popcorn and all. :)

Both eggs hatched overnight yeah 2 more babies. But I'm still worried about one.

Does anyone have a video they can post of a baby chic that is just minutes old? I'm concerned because the one is falling on its back, wobbly and I don't know if there's something wrong with it or it's literally just minutes old
