October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

In my case, my birds are inside anyway. I have button quail (which can't be outside here) and coturnix quail (which can be outside, but I keep inside in a partially climate controlled area).

So, I could really hatch birds 12 months a year, but I'd soon be overrun.

Rozzie.

I would have preferred to wait until Spring but I got the chance for the Marans early so I had to take it!

I am doing my first hatch ever... We only put 5 eggs in. They are due to hatch around the Oct. 4th. 1 ended up not being fertile, 3 deff. have something in it and the 4th I am torn on if it's still viable or not... so heres hoping! It's a VERY old bator that was used many years ago... so I'm surprised we made it this far.

Just stuck a dozen eggs under the white Silkie....again. When her babies get around 4 weeks old, she starts laying and will lay an egg a day for about two weeks straight, then she automatically goes broody again. I broke up her two broods as she tends to lose so much weight when she goes broody. But now that she's at correct weight, I'm letting her have eggs this go around. Eggs are from white leghorns, red leghorns, and a couple of ameraucanas. The down side is, these eggs have been refrigerated, as all of the layers were recently sold. I'm going to candle them Monday to see if any are still viable, and if not, I'll try to find someone that has a half dozen or so fertilized eggs.

I have a White Silky that I HAD to name "Lil Mama" she is sitting right now on a half dozen assorted EE/Marans crosses. I did not have the heart to take them from her :)

So I just candled (I'm on day 6) and it looks to me like only 5 of my 14 eggs are viable

I am so bummed out. I was hoping to keep at least 4 pullets out of this hatch. Maybe I'll just pick up some chicks at the feed store. Here are a couple of candling pictures that I took.
