Odd looking packing peanut

My guess is that it will feather out normally. But it would be really cool if it didn't and kept that random red hair thing going on. Is he in a tank with older chicks? What a good little trooper!!!

We've got him in a stock tank by my desk at work, so he's in with some guinea fowl, ducks, and other chicks that are either ailing or being held for customers. I started out with him in a separate enclosure, but let him out and he's been fine. Like my bantams, he likes to use the larger chicks for shelter.

I'm afraid to bring him home yet, my chicks are outside, and I think he's small enough to get through the wire still. I may let him grow a bit at work. My co-workers are getting a kick out of him, in any case.

He's growing up, but not losing his peach fuzz. (Yeah, looks like it's a boy)

The first picture shows his size compared to chicks we got more than a week later - still smaller.

Super cute, but not sure about letting him out with the big kids. I wanted to take him home this weekend, but I'll have to set him up a private condo. Maybe he could bunk with the bunny?

Doesn't look like any california white I have ever owned. Does she have any dark dots on her like a california white would?

No black on him whatsoever. He was packed in with the california's, but we've gotten odd ones before (that's how I got my silkies).

That's true about the Rex appearance - I hadn't thought of that! Maybe he's ultra-rare new breed of Rex chicken...

As you can see, he's doing fine. I brought him home on Sunday, put him in with the half-growns to start with, but they were sort of shunning him, so I put him in a bin in the garage. He doesn't like it, he wants to be with people. Not chickens, people. He likes to sit on my shoulder and play with my hair.

He's starting to get some little pin-like feathers on his neck now, he's lost most of his little red corn-silk hairs. He's got some odd feathers on his legs as well. Still pretty small though. I'm thinking of just getting a parrot-sized cage and putting him in the house.

He REALLY looks like a rex to me. Which is wild in a bird.

That said: If you go for a 'parrot sized' cage, save yourself some money and look for a finch flight cage. They're not nearly as 'heavy gauge' and not as expensive as a result. Also, if you can find one that's taller rather than high, he'll make better use of it, since he won't be climbing the bars with his beak like a hookbill. (I got a set of 4 24X18X36 (height depth length) cages that stack in a rack on ebay for less than 100.00)
