I had originally thought this was a cuckoo maran due to face mask (2 weeks)

As this one has feathered out, I've realized the leg color is all wrong

(Upper barred bird, lower one is a dominique)

Now, though, I'm looking at the breast markings and am thoroughly confused. Am I seeing barred rock crossed with penciled rock? Cockerel colors? Something else? 7 weeks now

@EmmaRainboe look.

I believe it's just a very poorly marked Barred Rock. Though some of us speculate that some hatcheries have been crossing another pattern into them to get this weird mixed looking pattern. It's a pullet.

Glad to hear pullet. She has been dubbed Cuckoo due to the odd pattern (looks kinda cool for a backyard flock). So far, the only cockerel in the bunch is this one (with his head buried), a golden penciled Hamburg dubbed Cheetah. The Welsummer behind him is unimaginativemy named Wellie

Just to add to the flock creatively, one of the PR went broody on an empty nest. The other 2 have been sporadic layers and with highs in the mid 90s, I didn't think I could break her of being broody....so got 6 eggs from a guy I work with. He has "blue-laced red wyandottes" and a couple of olive Eggers (look like really really dark barred rocks). Had a hen hatch a couple of babies 2-3 weeks ago...who are BLUE! He's scratching his head over where the color came from. I looked at babies: both have head spots (1 crisp, 1 blurred so suspect 1 of each). Looked at blrw again and thought they were awfully light. Told him I had a thought on the blue color but wanted to double check. Yep, he has SPLASH laced RW...crossed with the dark barred, and the babies should feather out as blue barred adults. I have 3 and 3 of the eggs and mama has settled in nicely but aggressive with anything near her (I got pecked several times putting the eggs under her). Those are due the end of the month.

She got off the nest for a drink, dustbath, short stint with the rest of the flock as a " birk, birk, birk, birk DON'T COME NEAR ME" session. Only the 2nd time I've seen her off since the eggs went under her a week ago

Usually the nest looks like this

You have a “buff barred rock” a barred rock x Rhode Island red hybrid.
