# of hens in my coop.

Hello I have a 11x24 foot run with a 8x8 coop. Currently we have 4 BOs, 3 Doms and 2 BJG. Is our setup to small for them. What is the right number of chickens for this coop?

16 large breed chickens comfortably. That is based on 4 sq.ft. per chicken in the coop. : )

I agree, this is plenty of room. In my opinion, run space is much more important than coop space.

Yes, and it's good to factor in things like size of run, or free ranging, the coop would hold more hens depending on how much room they have during the day.

You could get a few more but I always think more room for each chicken is better. It is up to you. I wouldn't get anymore than 20 chickens in that space because then they will be crabby chickens.

You certainly could expand your flock. I kept 12 hens in an 8' x 8' coop very comfortably for 1.5 years. Not that you would want to, but you have PLENTY of space, which is a very good thing! No critter likes being crowded. You got any pics?

I have a 8x8 coop with 18 birds in it and they are fine, I'm going to be adding some perches tomorrow. My fenced in area is 6x20 plus they free roam in the after noon, once eggs are laid. We plan on expanding our coop in the spring to make room for more.

There is no "right number of chickens" for your coop. Some people give as little as 2 sq. ft. per bird in a coop housing, while others give 10 sq. ft. of space per bird. Commercially, chickens are given less than a foot of space.
I always recommend at least 4 sq. ft per bird, although even my bantams have more than that. You have some large breeds, so I'd opt for more space rather than less. Less birds per space = easier/less cleaning and happier birds when weather is foul.

Thank you all for your reply. I feel alot better now, knowing that they aren't too overcrowded. I was hoping to add 2 more in the spring.
