A bad case of croup.
Tuesday night he was up a lot and having trouble breathing, they call it stridor, when they do that. I took him in to our pediatrician the next morning. The doc is usually a lighthearted and joking-type of guy, but he looked very serious when he listened to Jacob's chest. He ordered a steroid shot and a breathing treatment, then had the nurses check on us every 5 min or so, but Jacob wasn't really getting better, so he sent us to the hospital for monitoring.
The nurse asked, "Is the mom driving him to the hospital?"
The doc hesitated.
I said, "Me driving as opposed to what?"
Nurse:"An ambulance."
[I'm thinking, this might be bad enough to need an ambulance? Then, I really start to get scared.]
Doc: "Mom can drive him."
Then he went on to tell me if it doesn't get better at our local hospital, he might have to send me to the Children's Hospital an hour away.
(Now I'm slighly panicking.)
I called DH to meet me at the hospital and to bring me a few things to stay overnight at the hospital. All I had on me was the baby and the diaper bag. They gave him another breathing treatment in the hospital and the steroid shot FINALLY started to kick in and he looked to be back to normal. They discharged us yesterday morning with a precription for oral steroids.
Although, once the steroid starts to wear off, he starts having trouble breathing again.
Croup can't last forever, I just have to wait it out.
Wow Belle, I hope he gets better fast. Hang in there.
