Lori, actually I never thought of that as a full-circle use for culled birds. Very good of you.
After watching Frightful eat about 10 pounds of mice during her recovery, and helping them thaw meals for the birds while I was helping out, I know they will value my donation when I deliver it in January.
The lady that runs the place even picks up roadkill if it's fairly fresh and not too flat. They are desperate for feed.
The birds I have so far were all in perfect health, well-fed, and young enough to be a good meal for a hawk, eagle or largish owl. And since they were feathered they'll be better for the birds. Apparently baby chick fuzz can make raptor's throats swell if they eat too much. So I always raise mine until they're mostly feathered before I make any dire decisions.
So I don't feel bad at all for culling birds I can't afford. I just have to mark the freezer packets VERY clearly.
