Ended Official 2020 BYC Halloween Hatch-Along

It can be dangerous though.
She actually saved 4 chicks from certain death once when a power outage here came at the end of a hatch. What I thought was the end of hatch. I had set the non pipped leftover eggs in a carton on the fireplace ready to discard. She said you do know they are peeping right? No I can’t hear them. Power was still out so she took them and put them under her top. Power came back in a couple hours. Put them back into incubator and they finished hatching. She’s amazing.
My wife is the opposite of an enabler.
I'm sure I'll hear it in the morning when she hears all the peeping coming from the incubation room.
It's going down to 30 or below tomorrow night. I better get the basement brooder done.

As much as she likes them we keep them outside right after hatch. So I’m heading to barn to get brooder cleaned up as well.

Good luck to all and congratulations to those with new chicks!
Out of the three eggs I set, two were fertile; they are going into lockdown today. I slightly wasn't expecting for them to hatch, so the fact they've gotten this far makes me think I might have to pull out a brooder.

THIRTY SEVEN out of 40!!!!!! There were three stuck in their shells. One may have been totally fine and just the last to hatch, but one was certainly stuck had zipped mostly and had dry feathers poking out of the shell. Here he is!

then this baby may have been fine without my help. Partially zipped but no activity didn’t notice anything out of ordinary when I opened him up.

this one had membrane really dry around the pip. My little helper got to HOLD IT WHILE IT HATCHED. Eeeeeee. He won’t ever forget it

EEEEEEEE! What an exciting morning!!!

monitoring all in the brooder and photos of ALL the colors soon!!!!
How awesome!!! Congrats!

Swooned him with breakfast. He’s left the house to work on our dirt bikes! Thank goodness. Now can move the babies lol

Question on electrical cords run at a distance... we bought property and it looks like the old owners snipped all of the wiring due to it not being “to code”. Now I have 3 or 4 extension cords going out to the chicken area. If I were to purchase a 100’ cord with a splitter (electric fence box is at this splitter point) and another 100’ cord out to the coop, would it carry better electricity out there? The heat lamp/ceramic heat emitter is not putting out much heat. Enough for my two 2 week old Deathlayers, but not enough for these babies.

Any input is greatly appreciated! Want to keep the babies warm.

7 out of the incubator, 2 still drying in the incubator. 2 more pips. No ducks! Stubborn little turds.

Oh boy same problem here with former owner not to code.

The heat emitter may not be working due to wire gauge of extensions. Get the heaviest gauge extension you can buy however running 2 100 foot extension may not be enough for ceramic heat lamp. Heavy gauge extension are very expensive. Do you have a warming plate? I believe it requires less electricity than ceramic coil and would be far safer.

I would have to check the co-ops and tsc, but may be able to pick up a heat plate. Running into town shortly, so will check around. Currently only have two ceramic bulbs and regular heat lamps.

When it comes to life or death, would rather have heat out there, no matter what the source. The duck house is 6 feet long. So part wouldn’t be heated.

It depends on the size (awg) of the cord, the amperage of the load/s and to a degree the ambient temperature.
How many amps/watts are the things you are powering?
Add up all the amperage to the first location and all that at the coop.
Theoretically, you can power virtually anything but you may not want to buy the size cord you need.

Thank you! I’ll do some math to figure out what I have running. I’m sure the electric fence box doesn’t draw much. Fingers crossed I can figure it out before he finds them in the house lol
