Beagle field trialing:

My hobby has ruled/structured my life. Where I live, my friends - are all based around my hobby/obsession. I attended my first field trial in 1959, but have been training beagles longer than that.

When the Princess and I were first dating we'd go out on a date each Friday, and then I'd say, "I'll see you on Monday." After months of this she asked who I was spending my weekends with. I told her, "Be ready tomorrow morning at 6AM. Dress in warm comfortable clothes, and I'll show you who I spend my weekends with. We went to a field
trial, I won both classes and decided that she was a good luck charm as well as a keeper.

It's a rare day that I am not working dogs. I love developing young dogs. At one time I was attending 20 - 30 field trials a year. I don't compete anywhere near that much anymore and frequently send my dogs with a handler.

This hobby gets me outdoors. I am not an indoor sort of person. I love the environment and interaction with my dogs. It is someplace that I belong.

Sacrifices made. Too much time spent away from my children and wife especially in the early years until she reined me in a bit.

Amateur, Adept, Expert? I have been elected to the Brace Beagling Hall of Fame by my peers. Have judged many field trials including major events, and bred and finished more than 50 field champions. I feel that I have an eye for quality in a young dog and enjoy rehabilitating dogs that others have given up on.

I have never put myself in the position where I depended upon the dogs for income. I know people who do this, and generally they have to compromise themselves in many ways.

After the Princess, my kids, and my friends it's the thing that I love most in my life. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I'd have to take them first. :gig In my member 'interview' there's a picture of Rattler a dog that I rescued from a bad situation and trained/handled to his championship. He was not an exceptional performing individual, but with his great personality became my pet.

My favorite hobby is horseback riding. I love it because it's therapeutic and I love horses, and because I can't own one of my own, it's a good alternative. I take beginner lessons on a beautiful paint mare. I also went on 2hr trail ride yesterday.

Question:
I don't have any pictures that I took, but I do have some that someone else in my family took pictures? Also, is it ok if I scribble out my face?

Unfortunately, I have never been fortunate enough to find a hobby or an interest where I was able to generate an income. Regardless, I do have a variety of interests and I thought I might share a few here.

I really enjoy fishing. I have since I was a child. One of the things I most enjoy is the time spent with family and close friends enjoying nature and being out doors. I thought I might post a few pictures here of my favorite fishing memories.

This is a photo of me fishing from my inflatable pontoon boat. We're in the mountains at about 6000 geet elevation during a family camping trip. It's so peaceful and relaxing enjoying the surrounding beauty while waiting for my next bite.

In this picture, my son Tony is proudly holding his large mouth bass caught on Lake Shasta in Northern California.

This is my son Michael, showing off his large mouth bass also caught on Lake Shasta.

This is one of my favorite pictures. On the left is my long time best friend Pat and I'm on the right. This was the last of many outings on the water and we had a great time. Unfortunately, Pat passed away maybe a year later due to cancer. He lives on in my memories as do out many adventures together. There's more to fishing for me than catching fish!

Turkey Hunting has been a lifelong love of mine. We're limited to only a few weeks during the spring turkey season and wild turkeys can be a challenge. I think what makes this so enjoyable for me is the challenge itself. The wily turkey can be difficult to fool. Over the years, I've learned to call them in but the slightest hint that something is not right will send them fleeing. My son Tony has taken a shared interest and we've enjoyed several turkey hunts together.

This is me walking out of the trees back to the pickup with my turkey a few years ago.

This is my son Tony posing behind his huge turkey (10-1/2 inch beard) he bagged 2 years ago.

This is one of my favorite pictures. I'm positioned in some oak trees wearing my camouflage blending in with my surroundings. Gobble gobble!

My wife actually took up the hobby creating oil candles. My role initially was to assist in thinking of how to decorate them arranging the contents and trying to make them appealing to look at. My role expanded to learning how to drill holes in fragile glass for the wick. After researching this process, I found there is quite a bit to learn about drilling glass and if not done properly can result in health risks inhaling the fine glass dust created by the drill.

Obviously, the attraction for me is having something we enjoy doing together. More than just putting the material together and making the candle is doing the ground work. We find various glass containers at yard sales, thrift stores, estate sales, and so on. We've made these oil candles from old syrup dispensers to canning jars. I like finding unusual glass to work with as much as enjoying the finished product and posing it for a picture.

The following images are a selection of my favorite oil candles we made together.
