It gets nasty in there when I do the deep clean, so I always wear a mask when I do. I understand some folks get all antsy-in-the-pantsy trying to breathe in them but luckily masks don't bother me.

My coop has these ventilation window-things, so I just open one when I need to. I sometimes wear gloves when the coop is super messy though.

We all know how much dust those birds can create, so I'm just wondering who wears some kind of respiratory protection when they are in and around the coop - and when!

Have you had any issues from not wearing a mask?

I have never worn a mask, I work up a good sweat and a mask makes it worse and fogs up my glasses.

The way our coop is designed I am done in less than 10 minutes. I only step in once for a moment to sprinkle the deodorizer after I am done. So, I feel like I don't need to wear a mask and so far I have no ill effects from it.

No, I never wear a mask when handling my chickens or cleaning. You don't need to wear one but if you have any trouble breathing or something like that then I would. :)

Hello! I've never even thought about it! I do know diatomaceous earth I hold my breath when using it until it settles but I didn't think about other potential hazards that get scuffed around when cleaning the coop.

Our chickens poop on a poop board that is cleaned daily and generates little to no dust. I don’t wear a mask for that. For the once a year spring cleaning of the coop, I do wear a mask because it’s dusty!

I also keep pigeons, chukars and pheasants and although I have seen a couple of people get sick, and it's a bad "flu" I very seldom wear any breathing protection. I have heard that histo can also be an issue but I've only ever heard of one person whom got that illness.
