By chance, is your BYC avatar the perp? It has a guilty look on its face.
No. That is my guard pup. My lab committed the crime. Here she is.

She looks very guilty. Sorry for your losses but the labs and mixed labs that I have had in my lifetime could not be trusted around fowl. They have been sweethearts though.
Yeah. I thought I could trust her, as she was good with my pullets last summer, and left the ducks alone up until yesterday. Oh, well. Gotta learn lessons somehow. I am working on building a fence around the garden to keep the dogs out and the birds in. Im praying I don't loose any more. Mom said that once the fence is done, I can get 2 or 3 more ducks to replenish the flock, so that's better than nothing I suppose.

Wisdom comes with the things we experience in life, both good and bad.

I have two dogs, so I totally understand how they can do that. If you train them right, they will stay away from the chickens. My dogs won't even go near them anymore, lol. If you need any tips, I would love to give them!

Also hawks are a pain where I am at, and we can't really do anything about it, because it's illegal to kill them... :idunno

I agree...if you train your dog(s) right, they won’t mess with them. We were lucky to start that training process with our dog was a pup, and though she did get 1 chicken it was when she was very young, and to be honest she seemed to be playing. She is 3+ years old now, and does’t pay the chickens any mind. Our dog (Bella) is a Lab/German Shepherd mix.

My neighbours have a playful dog ( a labradoodle) . He went after my chickens a couple of times. Just to play I suppose. The chickens got frightened and fled over to the neighbours on the other side a couple of times. Once the dog got a few chickens feathers. :fl

He is trained now and it seems he lost interest in running after them. He watches the chickens quit often without getting over to the other side. 😇

OUR dogs don't bother the chickens at all, but these were dogs who they know kill small animals. And this was the first time they've ever gotten out and made it over to our property. It was carnage.
