Our worst predators in the past have been hawks. When i first started out it took me a little while to figure out what was taking my birds. I kept focusing on my ground attack for predators. Until that one day the hawk slipped up and let me see him. Needless to say no more chicken buffet for him. Now we keep netting over our pens. The use of netting also gives a good sence of security for keeping those couple chickens that always get out in. lol

Killing a bird of prey is against Federal law, fyi. There are other ways to discourage hawks.

I guess by me saying "no more chicken buffet for him" sounded like the demise of that hawk. No.. the use of the net just closed his oppurtunity for his easy pickin chicken buffet he was growing acustom to. lol

2 inch knotted netting. I placed a pole in the center of my pen and ran rope out to the outer poles for the net to rest on. Then simply cable tied the net to the rope. The Randel Burkey Company sells a variety of netting. Some of that netting can be exspensive if you have to buy netting rated for heavy snows. Luckily where i am snows are light if we even see any.

Sorry I was a bit quick, didn't mean to come across the wrong way. I realized after I wrote that what you meant, but it would have looked weird to delete my whole post,
so I left if.
