I use a medium or construction grade sand in my big coop, which is built up off the ground. In my smaller open-air coop the floor is dirt as it is built directly on the ground.

I use pine shavings with an occasional load of leaf litter and hay tossed in. I like the theory of deep litter, but something so wet just doesn't work in my climate. What I do now is sort of a dry version of that.

I REALLY thought I was the only one who liked their dirt floor! I was afraid to say anything because there are so many strong opinions against it.
So nice to see Im not alone!!
Although, in the winter, I will throw down leaves, grass and such (so I dont have to clean as much...)

I use chopped straw with Sweet PDZ, either Standlee Flock Fresh or Coop Klean, whatever I can get cheaper. Went from pine shavings to this about 3-4 years ago. It is expensive, but keeps my coop drier in the winter when I have a condensation problem on the floor. I only clean out my 8 by 8 coop completely spring & fall, so the price is not so bad.

Is there an exact other I can add as an option for you to choose instead of other?

Shredded paper. We send newspaper and old documents and such through a document shredder.
It seems like other people also use shredded paper.
