Where are my dirt lovers?
My current coop has a dirt floor, but I still like to put down leaves or shredded paper to help when they come in with muddy feet.
At my other farm I did a layered deep litter and liked it a lot because I could scoop it up and use it in the garden. The dirt floor doesn't really allow that as the girls break whatever thin layers I put down into dirt.

I'll use shavings, but prefer free which is leaves and paper.

I only tried shavings and straw in the coop (deep litter with a mix of materials in the run). I found that shavings lasted twice as long between clean-outs -- up to three months in cool, dry weather.

I threw in a little scratch from time to time so that chickens would keep it well-stirred, used to manure fork to break up any crusts as needed, and added additional shavings as needed.

I chose other. I use wood chips. I think I'm the only one who is that cheap as far as bedding. :D
Will you please change your vote from other to Wood Vhip...it means wood chips. 😤 @CarpCharacin Can you fix the v word in the poll option please. :fl
