Chickens are raised for various reasons, and some people choose them based on practical reasons, while others choose them for aesthetic reasons. If you're looking to expand your flock of chickens, black chickens can be an excellent choice. In addition to adding aesthetic value to your flock and backyard, black chicken breeds are among the most stunning breeds to raise.

So, which of these black chicken breeds do you have in your backyard flock?

Feel free to post pictures of your black-feathered chickens (along with breed names). We'd love to see them. Place your vote above, and please elaborate in a reply below if you chose "Other".

Just a Black Marans hen and my silkied Black Cochin bantams at the moment. In the past, I also had a Black Australorp and a Black Silkie. I guess I really haven't had many solid black chickens in my years! I do have Barred Rocks, an Ancona, Mottled Cochin bantams, and a Birchen Marans as well for mostly black chickens, though. And I'd love to have woolly Svart Hona some day, too. :love

Anyway, since pictures were requested, here's a few of my silkied Black Cochins 🥰

And my Black Marans, Vivienne :love

In the past, I have had Black Sumatras, Black Sexlinks, and White Faced Black Spanish Bantams. Those three breeds were quite different from each other, but all were nice.

(My vote for "other" is actually indicating three breeds, as none of them are on the list.)

Caligula, the Ayana Cemani, is the best mom I’ve ever seen. Weird. Not affectionate. Very serious chicken.

Black (or Blue), the Marans, are very broody, but don’t stay the course for longer than a week. Very affectionate birds walk around talking to me frequently.
