I have them in the event of the apocalypse and/or social collapse.

No, really. My hubby is a huge conspiracy theorist, and I have asked for chickens for years now, just for the eggs, the asthetics, and entertainment. Hubby finally let me get them when he decided that the apocalypse is coming sooner than later, and food shortages will force us to live off our land and wits.

Do I believe in it too? Not entirely, but at least I get my chickens in the meantime.

Because they are funny and beautiful and provide eggs and meat which you can eat happily, knowing that you give them good lives, and to make a stand against the hideously cruel, inhumane treatment of animals by the industrial/agricultural approach to food production in our country now.

It didn't start out to have chickens as entertainment, but they are pretty funny to watch and the llama babies play tag with them. Theyrun to the babies and the babies run at them. Life can be very strange.

I find my pet hen Virginia very therapeutic. The way she calmly talks back to me when I hold and pet her in my lap. I love to watch her scratch and scritch in the dirt the way she kicks dirt and debris is so comical, not to mention the dust baths. I bought her from a feed store as a young chick She is a bantam Millie Fluer and I have had her for approx 8 years now She is my pride and joy, and she thoughtfully lays an egg with love almost daily. I tuck her in every night .

My other is because they're funny!! They make me laugh - a lot!! And I enjoy them as a relaxant...with all the chaos in my house everyday, it is great stress relief to go outside & watch them/spend time with me every day. Like Calgon, but without the soap & water!

They bring such a delightful and interesting infusion into my life. I would never have dreamed that there was so much joy to be had getting to know a chicken, or a flock of them. What a hoot!

How about owning chickens to prove that there is a better way to produce a higher quality egg than in a smelly, overcroded, rotating factory? Then you can eat those eggs and feel good knowing exactly what the chicken ate and how it was cared for. If you're someone who eats your chickens, (I'm vegetarian), you can also attest to a humane culling. Those are my two "other" reasons.
