I have had shipped eggs sent to me in egg cartons ... and hatched 15 out of 16 from them! I have no preference in mailing, and have had both good and bad luck with shipped eggs.

I hatched some Barred Rock eggs that came in a box with one corner crushed. Six eggs were broken inside the box, even though they were bubble wrapped, packed inside big bubble wrap, and padded with packing peanuts. They had a rough trip, and they went into a Little Giant Still Air incubator that was not cooperating. The temp went to 102 twice during the hatch. Every egg that went into the incubator hatched!!! Three of those are laying consistently for me now, even though it's about 20 degrees outside. Don't give up. You may have an excellent hatch in spite of the heat spike.

wow, I wasn't the only one with a temp spike huh? mine went to 102 today, I was nervous,..ok 6 are in lockdown, the other 14 are still baking untill 25th or 26th. I am getting excited!!!

Corny Chick, I agree!!! I think I am going to take them out of the bator (as move the sponge I do have in there now under the wire, and then put them in egg cartons with the bottom cut out. I've been seeing good success doing that as it seems to make them work less hard to pip in the right place since they've been used to that position. I also technically counted the 5th as day but I put my eggs in the eve of the 4th (about 9pm) so I think I am going into lockdown on next tuesday evening.I figure 12 hr searly cant hurt, and I think I'd rather be too early than too late to put them in lock down. I still have to do some experimenting to see if I can find a way to add water without opening the bator and as for now, keeping my humidity between 26 and 40 seems to be doing best for me... we shall see!

OK, 2 quick questions here:

1. How will I know if a chick has died inside the egg (at least until it's supposed to hatch)?

2. How do you handle "lockdown" with a broody hen that leaves the nest each morning? She's not gonna know that she should stay on the last few days... Course, it's been raining here anyway and humidity is like 90% between rain showers... so maybe doesn't matter anyway...

Just checking in. I am still a go for the Christmas hatch with 24 viable Mille Fleur D'uccles. I had to toss two more yesterday that had blood rings. I was in the incubator anyway to candle the Light Sussex eggs for my New Year's hatch so I decided to take another look at the MFD's. I also had enough room in there to move the others from the Hovabator so they are all in the Brinsea now. I am going to spend the time between now and lockdown trying to successfully get the temp and humidity stable in the Hovabator so I can use it as a hatcher and leave the Light Sussex in the Brinsea for their last week of incubation.

The temp in the Hovabator has been so fickle since I moved it from the laundry room after the circuit breaker popped and they got cold. I am thinking I need to move it back up there for the hatch because the room air fluctuates too much in my office. I also think the temp is more stable without the fan. How important is the fan during hatch? Would it be better to have a more stable temp or better air movement with the fan? Opinions appreciated.

I will of course have to move it back downstairs for Christmas day so my guests can enjoy the hatch. Hopefully!
