My oldest is around 5 years, but I met a lady this weekend that has a couple around 9 years. That seems soooo old for a chicken that 16 seems impossible.

Our oldest was a Pig Kelso game roo, yes that is the real name. And to our knowledge he was the last one left.
He was in our family for 16 straight years and he was a full grown cock when we got him, so who knows how old he really was 16+++???
He still gave us chicks at 14, he had his one little old lady with him. The last 2 years they just hung out, scratched and were pampered.
And we called him of course "Old Man"
Now except for my breeding stock I dont keep a hen longer than 18 months. I dont want to sell somebody an old laying hen, which is sadly common here.

yeah aint that the truth my mom bought couple of RIR,BA and WR and it seems the only ones laying are the WR!! my mom had to kill two of the old RIR they were egg bound and 2 of the WR died one got its stupid beak stuck in the feeder and one died from not eating the other hens chased her away it seemed

We have 2 black Orps who are 10, and a male turkey of various sorts who is 11 or so.

Orp girls are still laying fine and are the favorite of the roo who is with them, but he is so incredibly gentle to them, no need for saddles. The turkey, he was SUPPOSED to be dinner. Given as his stupid butt is still around, yeah, he's a pet.

We had a 22 year old hen. She belonged to my great aunt before we got her. She told us that Brownie had hatched the same day my brother was born and she died on my brother's 22nd birthday. By that time she was blind and deaf. Poor girl.

I had a Buff Orpington hen that was about 14. She would always roost in the tree in the backyard and a preditor got her, so there is no telling how long she would have lived!

We've only been raising chickens for 6 years. Our two oldest chickens are six!
