At one time, we would have been battling over the bent rod but that big hoo was pulling line like a 300 pound bluefin! My crew and I have pulled on enough big tunas that we always enjoy putting a greenie on a standup rod, just in case the fight goes a couple of hours. We enjoy clearing the rods, making fresh beverages, and giving the angler a hard time, especially after he starts to get tired! We would rather crank on the 50-80 lb. schoolies! It wasn't until the hoo started fighting high in the water column that we realized it wasn't a tuna. When we first saw color, we thought it might be a rat blueboy, but it never jumped.didnt want to catch the tuna....boy yall a bad shape crew sounds like, we fight over who gets the rod here haha. Guess it's like catching these darn 80 pound amber jacks though, after a few you're done with them.
Yep Late April - July is our best over all mixed bag stream time too. The bigger hoos and yellowfin are there now though, they tend to like it a bit cooler, 70-72 ish where the dolphin and blackfin like that 75+ water. I'm ready to go though... dont be scared to grab a rod!! Never know whats on the other end.
My wife did that on the bow one day while we were tower fishing the bottom. She's too little to handel the big bottom poles for pompano and jacks, so she flat lines live bait off the front. Had a screamer hit it once. After 30 min into it she was convinced a big amberjack had got it and want to hand it off... but before it was all over, she had 2 nice yellowfin and a big ol wahoo from doing that that day.
