offshore fishing

Thanks! That fish was 11'-10.5" long, we estimated him at around 500. It was all my friend could do to lift his head out of the water for a picture! Not too bad of a catch from a 19' boat!
I was thinking in the 500- 600 range looking at what I could see. he's a nice un for sure, especially from a 19 ft.

got to be nice to be that close to the blue water. It takes us 2.5-3 hours of hard running just to get to the shelf out of GA. But the distance equals a lot less pressure on the fish too, so when you get there it's usually ON!

we had about a 50 mile run that day. We started inshore targeting wahoo on the tuna hills but it was such a pretty day, I had a captain friend tell me on the radio, "if there was ever a good day for a small boat to go out and catch a big fish, today is the day". So my buddy and I pulled out my chart and we picked out a couple of lumps in 50 fathoms just inside the Washington Canyon and the rest is history. I was on a standup stuck in a belt for over an hour until another boat pulled up to us and tossed me a harness. After another 20 minutes or so, I was able to slowly pump it up. I miss that little boat!

whew it musta been nice to go 50 in 19! Been 60 in a 25 though myself. I still like those 31+'s haha....sportfisherman even better.

bet that was a handful though fighting him like that

most of our fish are way too big for the slot limit, the largest that I have guided, weighed over 70 pounds. 40-pounders are common with some 50-pounders and occassional 60-pounders. On a good afternoon, you can have double digit catches of the big fish. A 30-pounder is considered a rat! Last year we had thousands of puppies in the shallows, it will be interested to see if they survived the winter and come back, if so, alot of them should still be inside the top end of the slot.

yep we get the same here too. The big run on bull reds here is October though. They move in by the thousands. Use 12 -15 inch whole mullet for bait for them. 45-60 inches is a normal catch that time of year. Outside of October though, it's just the normal eating fish size. Havent done that in a while, got me ready for October again seeing those pics. Headed over Monday for a make up trip with one of my captin buddies, was going to be trout, but may switch to tripletail now if they weather is nice...

Nice reds!

wekiva
