how exciting for you!! think it's okay...mama hens don't lay on their eggs 24/7, even during hatching - just so long as you make sure the humidity goes right back up quickly...misting bottle is a great idea!
Well, it is Wednesday and I have 8 chicks in the bator.
The first one that pipped got his legs out, but he is stuck in the top half of his shell and will not make it (opening the bator may have adversely affected him if he had already pipped through the shell membrane). Poor thing has been struggling for 2 days now.
I still have 3 eggs that don't show any signs of pips. I am going to give them one more day and see what happens. I did remove the 8 chicks from the bator today as it has been 48 hours now since they began to hatch and since the other eggs aren't pipping I thought it best to get them out while I could.
I am pleased to get the 8, these were hatching eggs that I had shipped so I didn't expect a 100% hatch, but I would have liked at least 10 out of the 12. Tomorrow I will crack open one of the eggs that did not pip just to see what was going on in there. I wonder if there was a humidity issue- I know all 12 were viable at the 2 week period so something happened to cause those chicks to not pip. I have read about chicks drowning in their eggs before a hatch- I will have to research that a bit.
