Yep I was just doing that with 3 out of 5 of the day olds they have the begginings of it little poop dribbles to clean off for now then bed

Okay so update on pasty but situation I checked on everyone tonight and only two had it the smallest three week old and the smallest 2 day old chick and it came off easy enough except after I very carefully removed from three weekers but she acted very distressed and should they still be having PB at 3 weeks? She's half the size of my other 2 banty's and I think she's failing to thrive too!

P.s. I am giving the 2 day olds a few days to absorb and sleep so they are still separated from the 3 week banty's which are smaller than them

and giving the 1/2 size banty a less stressful environment with just her sisters for now I really don't want another of my babies to die on me is there anything I can do? I'd love to hear your pasty but cures too please!!

Fresh clean clear water changed everyday, proper temps in brooder, chick starter crumbles only and clean their hineys. If you give sugar water it should only be a teaspoon or so in a gallon of water and only for the first day. Some people skip the sugar altogether and just put avian electrolytes in the water. The poop can build up because of the fluff. Older chickens can clean it off but the chicks can't.

make sure it is warm enough in there too... was she under the heat lamp when you fond her?? could she have ended up on the bottom of a get closer to the light for warmth pile??

if your banties are smaller than the new LF chicks, this is another big worry putting them together... the younger ones will need more heat and may try to pile up on top of hte banties to get closer to the warm... better to have them stray away from the light for being a little to warm than have them pile and smush....

also, i just dealt with a HUGE mess of what i'm pretty sure was merricks... really sad.... i had like 18 and was left with 6 by the time it was done... the ones who survived i guess have the natural immunity to it, and i read somewhere that that's the best way to keep it gone, if only the strong surviv then the next generation will be strong too.... still doesn't make it any less sad when you loose them.....

I think it was failure to thrive for the first chick (she was under the covered part like I said she had a sort of neck/ head seizure the day before and never walked really good) and the second chick looks a little better today so it might be okay you'll be happy to know that I only keep a small cup of water in the brooders so it gets changed multiple times a day always clean and clear (tiny amount of sugar for first bowl of water), and the brooder temp ranges from 97-92 right now the banties are actually comfortable at that temp too since they are fewer and smaller (even though they have their wing and tail feathers). There's not a peep from them unless the big bad HAND comes and messes with their water or them Lol! and they spread out although they do like one spot of the box...

I'm sorry Evonne that must of been tough, I took the antibiotic water out and your philosophy is a good one so I think I'll follow it. What is LF chicks? P.S. I only have one brooder and the standard chicks are going to grow out of their box soon... and if I don't integrate them while their young won't they pick on the banty's then?

LF is large fowl.... not bantam.. standard size...

i just recently threw together chicks that were 2 months 1 month, and 3 weeks, and they seemed fine.. they were all very close in size, with the youngest being bantams and the middles being mostly bantams with a couple JG and the oldest group being LF and bantam/lf crosses.... i watched for a few minutes, and i think since all the colors wer so similar they didn't even notice all the newness... lol...
just put them together at a time when you will be around to watch them...

another thing you can try, put them together the first time on new nuetral territory so they're all a little confused...
i did this with a set of chicks once for some silly reason i had to put both sets in the bathtub... and one set was like 3 months and the other set only 1 month so a big size difference.. no picking on each otehr.. they stayed segregated, on opposite ends of the tub, but when i let them loose together in the pen later they were fine...
might be worth a shot.. put them in the tub together while you give the brooder a good cleaning....

I already cleaned the brooder this morning (dang it! and put the banty's back in...), but I have been promising to show the chicks to these little girls I babysitt for 3 weeks and it's finally worked out that we can do it this afternoon... so I might put them all together in the bathtub while we're watching them anyways what do you think? I don't want to stress them so what are some signs I should look for? Any advise?

Okay I forgot to say that the mom might not like them going into her tub so would it be okay if it is just confusing? the kids will be Ohhing and Ahhing and will want to hold them but I dont think I'm going to let them hold'em because that would be even more stressful for them... Eyes only

Okay everybody i'm in panic mode now! The chick that was exhibiting the same symptoms as the first that I seperated on friday died yesterday... sorry this weekend has been crazy so I haven't gotten on all weekend... I took the chicks over to the girls house on friday it was too nice not to

and everybody did great the Standard chicks were 4 days old and the banty's four weeks (still can't beleive 4 week banty's are smaller than 4 day old chicks Lol!) While we were watching them I put both groups together just to see how they'd do and they did great so I left them together all weekend and have kept on watching closely this weekend they are doing good.
Except this morning I checked on all of them this morning and another one of my banty's is having the same SYMPTOMS as the other two that have died! Can three out of four of my bantams fail to thrive after 4 weeks of living great? Is this really how it works? I've gotten so attached and now another might die

or do you guys think it might be something contagious after 2 have died in one week and another is exhibiting the same symptoms?

I can't believe I was stupid enough to put them together! Fingers crossed and hoping that none of my little standards die too so far all five new standard Chicks haven't exhibited symtoms and 1 of 2 banty's is fine.
