Ohiki Chicken Thread

Pics
Can someone please post pics of chicks with proper leg length? I have some with a little longer and some with short legs. And does any one have a pic of a silver ginger roo? I see lots of silver ginger hens, but no roos. Or will the roos molt out into a more solid color? Thanks

"Relatively easy to raise with a little extra care due to their diminutive size, the Ohiki do not have the lethal short-legged gene as is found in Chabo, one of its presumed ancestors, so the most important factor in breeding them is to select roosters with long-enough legs to be able to mount the hens and warm, completely dry raising pens for the chicks. Once fully feathered out, they are hardy."

quote taken from Marc King's website.. Here is a link to his pages on ohiki.. there are two pages and the second one describes the standard.. Hope this will answer your questions..

That helped a lot! I am sooo excited to have these and can't wait until they mature. Definetly a favorite so far . They are much more active and inquisitive for a bird on short legs. Thanks for the info and Happy Easter to you!

LOL>> Yes, they are quite the little pistols.. Mine are very active and always getting out and roaming.. Luckily they are easy to catch and very friendly.. And they love to spend time with you.. Those little legs don't seem to slow them down a bit.. Thanks and hope you have a great day too!

Good luck on them....If we can all try help each other with these birds they will be a nice breed to add...All I ask is to call them "project Ohiki" if the still have any feather stubble's....I dont regret using cochin all those years back it was the best thing to do. I dont have any birds with stubble's now but it took a few years to get them that way...I'm glad to see them out there more now...You will get some long leg and Med. and short when you breed them...Cull out any and all with any feathers on the legs...If you dont have enough of them to do that just breed back to one that dont have them and go from there..OR you can just breed feather leg ohiki also...No big deal...TM

All mine have the green legs, but some have the longer legs. Would it be better to breed only the shorter legged to short legs or still use the longer legged chicks? I am not trying to hurry I want to keep mine for a while just to learn about them and let them mature out to see how they turn out. I have been happy with mine and look forward to working with mine
