Ohiki Chicken Thread

Pics
It looks to me like you could have a good start for some Ohiki still in the project phase. They do look to have a high percentage of Ohiki in them but personally I would not call them finished yet. Amanda would be the best to tell you exactly what you have. The hen looks to have better type to me. Hope that helps you some

The hen is going to be out of a red ginger hen and the barred flytie/ohiki roo.. The rooster will have the same father. I don't call him "ohiki".. He is listed as flytie because he is a flytie cross. I believe has barred cochin in him due to the feather legs. Apparently he is not homozygous for barring and is also dun. Either way, they are not full ohiki becaue the Dad is the flytie bird and he has feathers on the legs. He very rarely passes that trait on however. Since the hen is barred, you can cross the two together and get barred roosters. Barring is dominant and she should throw some barred roosters for you. It does not show as well on them as she is a hen and hens don't show the barring quite as well as roosters, but when I enlarge the picture, you can see the faint barring (cuckoo).. You can cross them to get more and hopefully some nice barred yellow gingers (aka lemon cuckoo) which is one of the colors I was working on. Hope this helps.. The rooster definitely isn't ohiki in type. His tail and saddles will more than likely be longer than an ohiki.. The flyties are not necessarily ohiki, they are ohiki crosses and produce variation. However, his tail and saddles look good and are clearly developing faster than an ohiki for the age he is. . The hen would almost pass for an ohiki..

Hi, I'm new to the Ohiki world, I'm trying to find out all the info I can on them. I got my start from a friend of mine that lives in Floyd Virginia, I believe they actually came form Toni Marie,
I have several young ones right now. I raised Silkies for along time but I've found that I love the Ohiki and Phoenix chickens just as much. Is there a good website that I can go to
to find out standards for the Ohikis? or is there a standard for them ? any info would be greatly appreciated. Candy in Virginia

There is not much of a standard to go by but yes there is a Japanese standard. Here it is:

Japanese Ohiki Standard:
Comb: Single
Earlobe: White

Eye Color: Red-Brown
Leg Color: Green
Tail Angle: 30º
Weight: Male around 2 lbs., Female around 1 1/2 lbs.
Colors: Black Breasted Red, Silver Duckwing and White

There are colors that we have been working on in the US that is not in the Standard but for the most part this is what I go by.
Here is a link to my website it might help with some info: www.chucksohiki.webs.com

I would love to help with that, plus I always love seeing other peoples birds to see what they are working on.

I do. I feed it to them in the winter but not any other time of the year. It helps to fatten them up for the cold weather. That is a trick that Toni told me years ago that works very good.
How cold does it get in NC? Just wondering :)

Sweet Grain? Kinda like what you could feed a goat? Just wondering cause we have some grain (Sweet... you can SMELL its sweetnes! LOL) for the goats, and yes it has oats and pellets, ill see if it has corn in it, and the other ingredients but that could work for my soon-to-be-getting ohikis, that or just water them with some hot cocoa, thats makes everyone feel better, dont it?
