Thanks Amanda! That is the hen that I bred to my Ginger line. She has gave me some very nice birds. I only had to cull only one bird from her so far!

he does look like he'd make some really nice phoenix. I got a few like that from this year that I plan to breed back to the bantam phoenix next spring. Did a few this year and they turned out really nice, so plan to do more of it next year now.

Very nice Amanda! Are you going to use him in a Phoenix project or breed back to Ohiki for some non-moulting? From the look of him he looks like he would be good in a Phoenix project.

I will probably breed back to ohiki for better tails.. If I were into bantam phoenix, I would probably go that route too.. I have several. will breed the blues back to ohiki for sure however.

I have a question about newly hatched Ohiki chicks and raised nesting boxes. I’m used to my Silkie mommas and don’t worry about chicks not being able to get back into the nest with the hen. I can’t seem to wrap my mind around the concept of newly hatched chicks in raised nesting boxes in general and how it works with these little chicks in particular.

My little Ohiki hen is setting on her eggs in a nesting box on the ground of a small coop/run. This little nursery coop is situated inside her run so she is with her flock, but also protected from intrusion until her chicks get their land legs. She seems content, but I imagine she’d prefer a raised nesting box next time.

What is an ideal set up for an Ohiki hen and chicks? How high they should set off the ground. What about ladders? I am working with 12x12 coops.

I kind of like the little nursery coop set up. The upper portion has a nesting box and perch. It was a new coop to my little hen and I thought she would settle into the lower area easier which is why she isn't using the nesting box in the upper area now.

as far as the hen herself goes. It doesnt matter how high. If she wants a raised next box, she'll get in. Now for the chicks, they aint going back in the nest after they hatch, especially off the ground, no breed will til they can fly, but I have never had or heard of any that needed to. Just keep a good clean coop, maybe move other birds out so she can have it to her self and that's good enough. Some good bedding on the ground will be plenty for her to "bed up" with them in at night. You could try the ladder thing, but I highly doubt if any would try to go up.

I always just let my broodies raise them on the ground in the breeding pens and they do just fine. They nest on the ground here too.

Thank you, I was worried there might be a problem with the hen trying to get the chicks back into the nest. This is good to know that she will settle in with her chicks on the ground without any stress.

Here is a picture of my favorite Ohiki roo.
