OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Hey everyone. I was just wondering, how easy is it to rehome cockerels/roosters in NE Ohio? I have a couple of hens who keep going broody and one day (probably in spring) I was thinking of just caving and giving them some hatching eggs. But then there's the cockerels, which I can't have here in Cleveland. I wouldn't want to hatch them if it's gonna be too hard to rehome. I would say we could eat them but they will probably be crowing before they are at good eating size.

Anyway, let me know your experience with rehoming cockerels in NE Ohio.
I had one cockerel that I gave to my family farm. That was before I butchered. Now, I would just butcher any cockerels I had. Sorry I couldn't really help

This I can tell you the last two weeks I had been looking for a rooster and to my surprise I couldn't find one anywhere. At last, I thought to go down to my neighbor's house. I could have hugged her she had one of her girls go get me one on the spot. I offered to pay for him and she wouldn't take the money. He's a beautiful, barred rock. Thank God I was able to find one.

Not sure about Cockerels but I do know someone that is having trouble getting rid of his beautiful drake ducks. I guess there is an auction up there somewhere that you can go to though because that is what he said he would probably be doing.
The auction is for exotic birds and animals 14th, 15th,16th September. If you are looking for any wild ducks or swans they will have them, it's at Mt Hope. That is where I may take my drakes, they go for about 10.00 - 20.00 ea. for mallards. I am thinking about getting back into raising wild ducks again.

I forgot to tell you all my guinea hen started laying! what a surprise that was. I have a male and a female. First eggs are always exciting! :ya I want more guineas their ability to feed on ticks is exceptional. I was having a bad time with ticks, getting them on me all the time but six weeks ago I let them free range, haven't had a tick on me since. They follow me all around the yard. I have got so attached to them.

Glad to hear that! My uncle was recently diagnosed with Lyme Disease from a tick bite. Those little bastards are not to be messed with

There is no words strong enough to tell you how bad I hate them. I will get more of these pearl guineas and hoping to get a few Vulturine guineas also. They may have some at Mt Hope. :fl The biggest problem we have here is with deer ticks, they bury deep I had to dig to China in my leg last year, then go to get tested for Lyme. Sorry to hear about you uncle Becky.:(

How can they get away with selling wild ones Mark? I always heard it was illegal to have them. Mine all have the back toe on the right foot removed by the hatcheries to prove that they are domestic but I don't do that with any offspring that they have. My Runner Duck Mallard came with it's back toe off of the right foot missing too. The hatcheries claim they do that so that you can prove you bought them as domestic ducks. Thanks for telling me about Mt. Hope I would love to just see an auction like that and your Mallards will go for a healthy price it looks like. Good luck with selling them if you go.

Congratulations on your eggs Mark! How exciting those first eggs are. I always thought guineas were so loud. My friend had a flock of them raised from babies. The first time he let them free range he was working in the garden and when he turned around they were all gone never to be seen again. I think they went on to greener pastures, lol. He was not a happy camper.

Lucky you Mark. That sounds like that was a good find.

They have to supply the correct paperwork so you can get your permits. Speaking only for what I know about Ohio. The states still dictates weather you need a federal permit. If you want to check it out, go to the State of Ohio fish and game website. When they clip the toe the hatcheries are covering their rear end. I had a permit years ago when I raised wild ducks and you only needed a State permit, Federal wildlife laws have changed since then If the game warden in your area comes out to give you your state permit he will tell you if you need a federal permit. From what I understand you can own so many of each species but you can't sell them without a federal permit. I will advise you to talk to your game warden in your area before you buy any wild birds. To be safe know the laws ahead of time. There are so many ins and outs it is best to check all things out in your own state. The federal government will not even issue you a permit unless you have a state permit first.
