Well...the ducks just decided to finally sit. I removed the clear ones (she was sitting on a mound of them). About flipped out though, cause she started sitting on April 1, but no babies came til May 4. Don't know why so long- she was very serious about it and stayed on the nest like a good girl. I was expecting them before the end of April. Last year, the other hen sat about 1/2 way through then left the nest, but all are sitting tight this year. Oh, my mom finally told me " to leave them alone and stop thinking about it until I heard peeping", so that's what I tried to do.My first call ducklings hatched today...SOOOO excited! There are 4 so far, but I expect to see more in the morning. Three of the ducks are sitting right now, so I may be swimming in ducklings soon![]()
They are just so tiny and adorable! If any other Ohioans out there are looking for call ducklings, I'll be able to fix you up!
I have my first eggs (bought locally) due to hatch Tuesday in the incubator. What did you do to get yours to hatch (or did you have a broody)? I have never tried them, and am a little nervous about it.
I've been looking for a while. Let us all know if you find someone.
If I had more confidence in what I was doing I would do it for you. I am just raising my first batch of cx's now. My only advice for you would be to find an Amish family...
Good Luck in your search!
Does anyone know where I can get Brooder lights? I have one but it's a 250 watt. I'd like a few different wattage lights, but TSC doesn't carry what I'm looking for, and I can't seem to find them online.
:/
I met Aiden at a Poultry Clinic in Wooster. Great guy. If it wasn't so far for me to drive, I'd have him do my birds.I am using Pleasant Valley Poultry as my processor in Baltic Ohio (Holes County, 1 hour 45 minutes Northeast of Columbus, 30 minutes north of me in Coshocton.

crazy I tried to put them together but the older ones were picking on them. Put the little ones in a fenced off part of the run but they are difficult to catch to put back in their breeder. My Dixie rainbows are huge, so I think I will wait a bit before putting them all together. If it were me I would put them together now! Since they are all still smallish they should do fine. I put a 3 week old in with 5 day olds and they did fine. I would make sure you have PLENTY of food and drinking space, as well as overall space for them all to be able to move towards / away from the heat source as needed. Since they will have different needs as far a temperature go I would suggest your brooder have the light set up at one end and a much cooler end available for the older ones. As they age they will probably be able to acclimate to the same temps. After all, there will be plenty of friends to snuggle with if they are chilly, just don't make it too hot!
What is an Ohio brooder?Just watch them and see how they behave. I bought some Golden comets back in March and some Buckeyes and Barred rocks in April. The GCs are in a pen that will eventually become their laying pen, but they can get out fairly easily. I put the chicks (along with our three week old turkey poults) in a grow-out pen before we move them to final quarters. The GC's will leave their pen, join the little guys for breakfast and eventually leave by mid morning. So far they haven't bothered the little ones at all. I would think if you have all or mostly pullets, you should be okay if you have them in a big enough area. If you're really worried, you can put a dog crate in that is wide enough for the little guys to escape and get away from the big ones who can't fit through the bars. Or an Ohio Brooder will let the little chicks under it and the big ones won't be able to get to them.
