OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Ok hubby banned me from this site for a few days! Everytime I read I come up with a new construction idea for him.
I have a question about feeding.
Should you leave food out all the time for the chicks?
My oldest chicks are almost 5 weeks old and they are huge!
Youngest chicks are only 2 weeks.

Have been feeding them 24/7 so far.

Also when can they go outside. The 5 week olds are out most of the day in and enclosed run.

Hello everyone! We just moved to NE Ohio from St. Louis, so we're newbies to both chicken farming & to being Buckeyes. So far so good, except I was told not to get used to these mild winters... uh oh! Not looking forward to that

We just started out & can't wait to see how everything develops. After a few mishaps & lots of training, we're down to 12 chickens (open doors, dogs chasing, etc.).

Here's what we have so far...
2 SLW
2 RIR
3 red link pullets
1 amber link pullet
2 tetra tint pullets
1 gold sebright bantam
1 AGB

Hoping next year to add some more decorative birds to the flock as well. I'm dying for some silkies & polish! We feed our dogs a primarily raw diet too, so we're thinking of beginning some meat chickens as well to grow for them. At first we didn't think we could kill something we raised, but after having to do so with a few already, we realized it isn't so bad & would be a lot cheaper than going to the store all the time! Any advice or suggestions where to find good stock up here is greatly appreciated. I love having the mix of breeds, but would like to eventually get into a specialty breed as well once I get more experience.

Welcome from a fellow Clermont County-er. I'm from Goshen and know about the devastation your area suffered. I'm glad to hear you all are rebuilding and doing better. Best wishes to you and your town.

Check it out Buckeyes . . .

I'm so excited. A new shop just opened up in Columbus Ohio! And they stock locally produced chicken feed!

It's City Folks Farm Shop at 4760 N. High St. in the Clintonville neighborhood.

They also have gardening supplies, cheese and yogurt making supplies, compost, worm bins . . .
They may start hosting local chicken meetups.

Here's their website:

(I am not in any way associated with this business, other than planning to be a regular customer. No more driving outside the city limits to buy food for my girls!)
This is FABULOUS!!! I'm so excited to visit them next week...I can kinda make it a new route on my way home from work in Worthington to Cardington...sorta...
