OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Is there anyone in Hilliard area? do I have to get permit to have couple chickens in my backyard?  we have a nice sized yard with big fence, and I like to get 3-4 chickens this year, ...Thanks for replay...

I know in Columbus the rules to get chickens are beyond rediculous. I've never looked into Hilliard, but would guess since its all Franklin county you still have the same rules. There is a thread in the laws section about it, but as I remember it goes like this:

Present plans of proposed coop with plans for waste removal, since you can't compost it (lols)

If approved, get approval by neighbors.

If approved build coop, have it inspected.

If good, get chickens and bring them to a vet for a checkup (lols again).

Enjoy city chickens (or not....)

Well today is day 4 for the girls being outside in the run. Day 1- I put them all back in early in the day because I had to go out in the evening. Day 2 - I came out just after dark to find 10 hens settled in on the ground in a big clucking lump and had to return them all by hand into the coop. Day 3 - I found 7 girks in the coop (yay!) and 3 girls still sitting in the ground at dark. I'm wondering if they will figure it out tonight and return to their house at dark. Silly chickens!

Anyone familiar with EE? Wanna play Hen vs. Roo? I'm starting to think I've got a Roo.

Hi all new to this site. I'm a chicken enthusiast from the teeny tiny town of Kunkle Ohio in Williams county( extreme NW Ohio, you can almost see Michigan & Indiana from here lol) Seems like every other house has a backyard flock & I think chickens & horses outnumber people lol!

NickeeChickee,

I would suggest reading your revised code. Here in North Olmsted (west side) it specifically lists chickens and lumps them and sheep and cows in with dogs and cats saying that they

1) can't be in public spaces
2) can't roam unattended
3) can't be noisy or be a nuisance.

You can usually find a copy of the city's revised code (ordinance laws) on the city website.

Happy future chicken owning!

Mellisa

Thanks for the reply. The only thing on the books seems to be the no animals other than a cat or do within 100 feet of buildings occupied by your neighbor thing. Though I did find someone local and they are petitioning to have it rewritten to be more in line with neighboring cities. So fingers crossed that goes through by spring!

Welcome Sammyf123. :)

Anyone interested in splitting an order of chicks from Meyer? I dont want to wait until April to get my chicks, but i dont want the minimum order of 15. I am looking at getting 6. I would be able to pick them up and can go a little bit for delivery if needed. I am in northeast Ohio.

Let me know asap please!!!!!!

Welcome! I went to college at Bowling Green but that's probably the closest I've been to Kunkle. But I live in a place called Tawawa so no judgement here! LOL Hope you enjoy the forum!

What kind of chickens do you have?

yep you have to go to the health dept and get a permit and i think it is 7 you can have and no roosters
