The good thing about Barred rocks is you can sex them yourself by the head spot. In other words, agree to "straight run" but tell them you want to pick out the chicks yourself. Here's a "how to" from eHow: http://www.ehow.com/how_6101169_tell-barred-rock-baby-chicks.html Head spot isn't 100% reliable, but if you're good, your "straight run" may only turn up one or two cockerels.
My pallet coop is 3' x 4'-ish I forget the exact inches. But that's without the nest box in front. I've only but the one and the A-frame tractor last year. Will be making a modified pallet coop design this year if things pan out built on the "open front chicken coop" design, just in miniature.

Sadly, no.
NE Ohio is where they have their poultry research facility. The campus has lots of pens where they are raising turkeys, chickens and what-not which is why they have the clinic there. It's worth the trip just to see the facility. John Anderson is the one who wrote the book on keeping turkeys for 4-H and a lot of the pictures in it are his. Pretty impressive how much better the turkey workbooks are than the chicken ones. If there is any way you can get there, I'd recommend it. They also have raffles and door prizes. The family I carpooled with last year went home with a dozen white leghorn chicks.
Cool! I was thinking you might be able to tell that way.. the spots seemed different on each chick! But now I'm starting to step into dangerous waters armed with this new info! Dh is already wondering when these 'free-loading' chickens will give him a return on his investment. They are 18wks so I keep telling him SOON!The good thing about Barred rocks is you can sex them yourself by the head spot. Quote: Ha! Hubs must have hidden it from me! Our litter of pups should be done with the heat lamp next week and are getting too big for our whelping box/brooder. Maybe then I'll break down and go in.
And pick up a cake too. LOL
