OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

So today one if my babies hatched! I missed it I heard it all day thinking nothing would happen! I know I am supposed to sit on my hands it's so hard it looks like something is stuck and dragging the shell around. Is that the cord? I've never done this so I am so excited!
congrats on the hatch, its part of the cord that's holding it to the egg. if the cord is wet at all, break away as much of the shell as you can. if its dry and threadlike you can cut it. do not just pull it apart.

Thank you! It seems that it wet between two eggs to get it off. Next dumb question it's knocking a lot the eggs around hatch day was/is the 21st will the others be ok? Poor thing looks like it is looking for a friend

Ye gods!!! I'd be totally sunk if somebody wanted that many birds. I'd have to simply decline -- there'd be no way. Definitely small-scale operation here :) I'm trying to keep between 4-6 hens of the breeds I want to raise for sale, and only one roo per breed (trying to be considerate of the neighbors!) I keep re-selecting each generation and selling off my extras to try and keep the numbers down...

Doesn't this just stink? We have an egg business, and sell in small quantities (18 dozen here, 9 dozen there, never more than 25 dozen a week). We got a call from a chef that wanted 40 dozen a week. Man, I would have LOVED to be able to help that customer, but I simply don't have the birds and don't really want to scale up, since I already do exactly as much work on the chickens as I want to right now. It almost physically hurt me to have to say no.

I had to play catch up a little on the thread. I've been off to study and had my wisdom teeth pulled and missed 50 different posts! Lol I'm almost to lockdown. Only one more candeling session left Sunday and then it is lockdown. Not many chocolate orps left :( down to 7 out of the 15 I put in there. The ccl however are doing great. Out of 13 I still have 12 going strong. Hatch day needs to come so I can figure out my next go round. Lol definatley silkies and more ccl.

im so happy, just got another email about the brussbars, and the also nearly extinct (real) brown Sussex.

"Hello Brian,

I have put your name on the waiting list for the Brussbars and for Brown Sussex (which we also breed). I guess it will be next year before we can do anything with the Brussbars at the earliest. They have not bred well this year, but we have just had a good hatch of Brown Sussex and should have some to spare next year.

We normally only sell full grown birds, which are all individually wing tagged and pedigreed, so that would be what we would offer you as soon as we are able.

All the best, Andrew Sheppy"
