OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

im so happy, just got another email about the brussbars, and the also nearly extinct (real) brown Sussex.

"Hello Brian,

I have put your name on the waiting list for the Brussbars and for Brown Sussex (which we also breed). I guess it will be next year before we can do anything with the Brussbars at the earliest. They have not bred well this year, but we have just had a good hatch of Brown Sussex and should have some to spare next year.

We normally only sell full grown birds, which are all individually wing tagged and pedigreed, so that would be what we would offer you as soon as we are able.

All the best, Andrew Sheppy"

:D

Brian (loveourbirds), I'm curious if you have any Basque chickens. I think we are heading to auction with many of ours in a few weeks and I'm thinking I want to replace with Basque. I'd love to hear what you think of them if you have some. And if you have some for sale I would LOVE to hear that too! LOL

Thanks!

yes I have some basque, some that are growing and a trio of adults. I just started with them this year, these are my observations so far:

roosters are beautiful, fairly calm but ornery. I haven't weighed them but they appear the be in the 8 lb range. hens are pretty good layers of medium color brown eggs of descent size. they seem to be very protective over their eggs, roosters are very protective over the hens. they do seem to get bored easy so give them something to do if they are in a small cage.

this isn't the greatest picture, but its a picture of my current breeding trio.

edited to add: you have some breeds im looking for, or to diversify in my own flock, I may do some trading in the fall. I do have some chicks now, how many do you think your looking for?

Wondering if anyone out there can help.

Got home from work today and went to check on the feathered friends and got the fright of my life. This poor girl, looks like one of the roosters tried to kill her. I am VERY new to chickens so I am very concerned about her. I was able to get her out of the coop and into a small kennel. I'm looking for some advice! Was thinking I should try to clean it off as much as possible with warm water. Any kind of spray or ointment I should use? It is freaking me out because it is on her head. She is acting normal (as could be expected) and eating/drinking ok.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Needless to say those roosters will be hitting the road.

Thanks for any and all advice!!

this is a fairly common problem, it happens more if chickens are overcrowded. the cause was more than likely the rooster tried to mate with her and wounded her a little. the blood attracts other hens and they peck at it - they will peck one to death sometimes so its a good thing you separated her.

I put on blue cote, but I brush it on to avoid getting it in their eyes. the problem usually isn't as bad as it looks and will usually heal almost completely in a couple of weeks on its own. you can use any antibiotic cream that is not "triple antibiotic" do not use anything for topical pain, avoid lidocane (spelling) or anything that ends in cane.

your biggest problem will be flies. once it scabs over the chicken will usually be fine. I have seen them pecked clear to the skull, and a month later you couldn't tell it happened.

Our young cockerals keep have rape-killed two young pullets so they are going to auction the first weekend of July (seperated til then). How about I ensure they sell, along with some others and see how much room I have and get back with you after the auction? My aunt and uncle have a weekend place not far from you (Vinton Co.) and we usually go for at least one weekend in the Fall so a trade would definitely be possible. Thanks so much!

You know, I found some hatching eggs but wasn't thrilled about them getting here in tact from California and thought, "Who in Ohio might have Basque?" Immediately thought of you! LOL That might qualify you as "infamous"!

get things in line and let me know what you have to trade. im looking hard for blue copper marans and large fowl silver penciled rocks.

its has been amazing how people have found me, I don't show; some of my birds have been shown by others. I did run an add on craigslist and did some swapping at different places, but it blows my mind the calls I get from western states inquiring about birds. I don't have a lot of luck shipping eggs over the Mississippi river and im assuming it would be the same thing in the other direction.

im glad you thought of me though, lets me know people are noticing LOL.

depending on where in Vinton county it is about an hour from here, hocking hills area could be as little as 45 mins depending on how you drive.

Hatch day was yesterday having started out with 25 eggs, then 17 at lock down. 6 have hatched healthy, 2 we are watching closely and 9 didn't make it but were fully grown. This is my first batch actually making it, since my last attempt last month I did everything wrong. I want to try again. I don't think I am ready to buy some eggs until I master the free ones. If anyone locally to me has any extra eggs I can attempt or low cost please let me know.

im sure to have some on Friday (that's when ill start setting) I don't know what but they will be full blood, that is if your willing to come and get them.
