) Anyways.... I live on a small poultry farm in Lucas, OH. We currently have over 100 hard-to-keep-track-of birds including; Muscovy ducks, Pekin Ducks, Geese, and of course, 4 different breeds of chickens. We also have a huge, soaked vegetable garden and pumpkin patch.
welcome! when did you figure out you were an addict?

Thanks chickenpooplady and minihorse927! Nice usernames.

Does anybody here keep chicken breeds that are meant for warmer weather, like Andalusians, or is that virtually impossible? It's pretty much been raining here for a month and a half, not one day without rain. I try steeping in the garden on the first day and my whole leg went under, and I'm a little over 6 feet tall. I figured out that I was an addict when I starting raising chickens less than a year ago. If your talking about backyardchickens, then 3 days ago.

its not impossible to do around here, but you have to set yourself up for it. make sure you have plenty of indoor space. keep a heat bulb for them to get under if its to cold. roosters will show it first, the tips of their combs will start to turn dark, if you see that add more heat. that's something a lot of people don't tell you when you get started in chickens. if you see a dark comb in the summertime, that almost appears bruised; they need more water. watch about waterers that sit in the sun, some get so hot the chickens cant drink from them.

you did say your from Lucas, is that Lucas Co.?

I posted a picture about a month ago wondering if this Easter Egger is a Rooster or not. I am still wondering. Tonight when looking at it the DH said that it looks like its getting saddle feathers. Which would be great if it is a rooster. Making a list to see who we can pair with who and who we need to get rid of..

next on the list to figure out how to do breeding pins

Thanks for the helpful info! I have been interested in getting some Blue Andalusians for a while, any experience with them? My parents just didn't think that a breed like that could be raised here! What temp would be considered too cold? And for the heat bulb be an ordinary brooder lamp? Um, no that wouldn't be Lucas county, I'm in Lucas in Richland county.

that's one of the few breeds I haven't messed with. ive messed with other "warm weather" breeds. typically if you can keep them above freezing they will be fine.

Luckyduck2 I have 2 blue andulusians coming next week. I an planning on adding heat lamps to our run for the winter and tarping one side to cut down on snow in the run. I will let you know how things go over the winter. Also welcome to the forum!:D
