OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Is anyone interested in either a russian orlaff, swedish flower hen or cream lebar roo? I've got one of each extra and could bring to the swap if anyone wants. Otherwise I'll leave them home -- all I've got is my car, so space is at a premium

I wish I was able to go my cream legbar roo isn't looking too good no matter what we do

Egg laying is slowing down everywhere due to molts and the shortened daylight. I started my layers on lights about 2 weeks ago to keep production up, but it always slacks off anyway. I just keep lecturing them that they have to earn their keep and money for Heifer International!!

Really excited about meeting people on Sunday!! Don't let a little rain deter you...last I heard chickens don't melt...LOL!

I find it very interesting regarding the egg laying cycle. Since last Oct/Nov my flock will lay about 3-4 weeks, then off 3-4 weeks. The new ones that should have started laying in Nov. didn't lay until Jan/Feb. It has been the same all summer. I have one French copper maran that has been giving 3-4 eggs a week but out of the other 8-10 nothing until this week. The little porcelain bantys have started laying. I have 2-3 that are molting so that is one reason. Just puzzled why the cycle they have been in. I'm curious to see If the ones I bought the end of Apr- first of May will start laying this month. I haven't changed food. We redid their fencing, but that was 6-8 weeks ago. It seemed to start for the summer when we lost our head rooster, first part of June. It picked up a little while later but has stopped this past month. In the 5 1/2 yrs I've had chickens, I've not seen this. They quit while they are molting of course, but other wise I've had consistant laying. I wish I could figure it out!
A little frustrating!

Thanks, happychicks. For me, there were no signs at all other than the two almost-instant "mystery" deaths. It was when I was burying the last one that I noticed a single tiny bug run across her face, so I lifted a wing and

dozens of the things. When I sprayed the whole flock (including ducks) down tonight I checked them too because I'd never seen any signs on anyone and I found them on almost all of them.

I'm almost glad it's lice and not mites, but still wish I'd caught it before they had a chance to take out the two little ones.

I'm just getting started with the showgirls so I don't right now, but hopefully will be next spring.

I think I will check my flock this evening. I always thought you would be able to tell. Maybe more scratching and grooming than normal.

I think they are ok, but it doesn't hurt to check! We keep the de in their nest boxes/coops and also sometimes ash piles mixed with de for them to dust bathe in. I know you said you use de also, but it didn't work. So who knows!!!
I would be interested in some of your showgirls for next spring! Just keep me posted. I just love them!

My 2 year old hens have slowed down a little with the days getting shorter. Plus i know my older birds are molting everywhere. I wouldn't worry about it. You should see eggs soon again.

my first Cochin chick from the hen i bought and the first silkie chick from my pair.

:love The silkie does look kinda blue huh. Maybe one or both was split to blue. I'm not sure how that works. Anywho. :love

I wish I weren't so far, ShayBaby! D'Uccles are adorable!!! :)

Darn the miles! Little squirt got out again today. Not easy to get back when she doesn't want to be caught! She might find herself a bite-sized snack for my mastiff. =x

Interesting about the laying cycles! I almost expect mine that should have been laying long ago won't until next year now. *fist shake in coop general direction*

My one little quail egg hatched today! (He pipped early yesterday morning but didn't do anything for 30+ hours. Had me worried! I was about to go help when I heard cheeping and he was out in a flash!) Insignificant I know to those that hatch dozens or hundreds, but he's my first quail and SO CUTE! Teeny tiny!! Due Saturday are 2 cornish bantams, 1 black silkie, 2 BBS AM bantams, and 4 (/5? one looks like a double yolker) showgirls! And 13 more quail eggs due Sunday. So this little guy will be my buddy for awhile until he has more of his own kind. :D Did I mention he's teeny tiny? LOL. :love :love
