OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

That makes sense why they don't let people handle the chicks at TSC. There were a lot of kids there and I figured it had something to do with the children potentially hurting them or dropping them or something like that. He did hold them up and show them to me as he put them in the box so I could get a good look at them. He said the Australorps had been selling like hot cakes which struck me as funny

Overall it was a really good experience there. They got us set up with everything we needed and answered a ton of our (probably silly) questions.

My chicks all have very different personalities! There is one who is a little more timid and always the last to come to me, but is so gentle when she eats out of my hand! And then one who seems to think my fingers are food! I will wait a few weeks and post some pictures so you can help me figure out what they all are. I am guessing they are all girls - just like TSC said they were! Thanks so much!

I was talking about when I was picking my own chicks, to buy! The clerk handles them at time of sale, what's wrong with me picking up my own? As long as my hands are cleaned well. I've had to remind workers to clean theirs before touching them. At least I have the good sense to do that.

Because if everyone picks up their own chicks to buy, the result is the same as what I already mentioned. If you know how to handle chicks, that's wonderful Once they're in your box, handle them all you like. But if everyone handles them, it's hard on them. And most people want to handle them all, then they don't buy the ones they do handle. I'm just explaining why the store has the policy. It makes good sense, and it would be disappointing if they didn't care for their animals.

You may have used the hand sanitizer before handling them but that is just one small part of it. In theory, the employees have been at least familiarized with how to properly handle the chicks so (as mentioned) they aren't hurt, dropped, etc. They also know to put the chick back in the proper tub. They don't know the customer from Adam. You might be someone who handles chicks on a daily basis or someone who has never even touched one. They simply don't know. Not worth the risk. Not worth the stress on the chicks to allow all the looky-loos handling the chicks. Also not worth the aggravation of having the next person come in looking for pullets and going home with cockerels because the person before put the chick back in the wrong tub. Their policy reduces the amount of handling the chicks are subjected to and therefore reduces the stress and risk of injury for the chicks.

These are chicks, not puppies or kittens. For the most part one chick is the same as another. It is simply a matter of selecting what breed and sex you want. You are free to observe the chicks as the employee selects them. If they grab one that you think is too small or too lethargic then you simply ask them to put it back and select another.

Exactly. And really, you, the person who wants healthy chickies to take home, are going to benefit from the no handle policy in the long run. You will have healthier chicks because of it.

heck we didn't have until October last year? For some reason I thought we had it a whole lot earlier than that! I'm up for another one.

well I wasn't planning on getting mine going until the end of June but Dak offered up some eggs from her black Ameraucanas so I couldn't resist. I'm not going to be buying a bunch of stuff this year, I am just going to buy a few things here and there but not like I did last year. I've got enough here that if I can't have my own chick s there's a problem.

I already broke my rule of only one batch of eggs in the Inc at a time. Bidding on eggs and just bought CCL eggs. Lol

As to the 6 minimum order law, I was told that it is to keep the idiots from buying their kids a chick for Easter because they are cute and and then turning them loose when they get big, or just plain killing them because they know nothing about them. Basically it is to help promote humane treatment.
