OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I am in delaware.... 33 golden comets and a rooster... New to chickens but love it.....so does my son..
Welcome "neighbor!"

You do realize that there's no turning back now....you're going to want to get some color variety in there...then you're gonna want some other egg colors....then some bantams...and then fluffy Silkies, and so on......if you give a mouse a cookie....

(And there's no one here who will do much to help you overcome this addiction:)

Avianman,
So sorry to hear of your terrible loss--how awful for both you and your flock. I totally understand the risk we all take when we let them free range--they really love being out there but there's danger all around. I've lost one to a mama fox for the same reason, but realized she had her babies to feed and my bird was in the wrong place at the wrong time...and she only took one that Sunday morning. I too wonder if the culprit was young, or maybe there was a litter and a few of them, although I guess it's a little early for them to be that large...I've never heard of foxes being bloodthirsty, not like raccoons or weasels.
Best of luck with healing the survivors and moving forward. Hope you're able to resolve the situation (I love foxes...but this situation might be the time to take care of the wicked zorro) so your flock is safe...

Hi Egg! I put together these simple grazing frames to put in the chicken's garden so that their veggies could grow without being scratched to pieces. I also use them in the bottom of my outdoor runs so that grass/clover can grow thru them...
Is this hard on their feet?......having hardware cloth on the bottom of the run, or is it just a designated area?

Anyone have tips to covering raised beds? I will be transplanting some tomatoes from the basement under lights to outside soon. Right now the birds are scratching up worms and kicking dirt all over. Last year the veggie plants were so big they didn't do too much damage to them picking at leaves. Toward the end of the season they would hangout under the canopy of the leaves. Also I want to start a asparagus patch but am afraid they would scratch up the bare roots.

Any tips/advice is appreciated.

This is where I want to do the asparagus patch

This was last years garden... A little out of control

Eggs from my birds. An EE, a RR and a Australorpe

Oakley / Cincy BYC what's up?

I've seen photos of folks making an arch out of hog panels at either end of a raised bed, mid bed also if needed, and then covering with chicken wire or nylon netting. I think this was to keep small birds out of their strawberries, but the principle should still apply. They framed one end and built a door in it.

New brooder residents. They are getting moved to the top where it's taller tomorrow. I need to clean the top out from where we ground the sharp nails off and there's pieces left. They seen happy even on this cold morning!

Is this brooder outside ? I didn't see any heat lamps. If these are the case, I don't believe I would have the younger chicks out there with this weather. The little red chick is not feathered out enough for these temps.
