OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I'm going to try poultry netting and white flagging tape It's what ODNR suggested. I've also ordered those night guard predator lights. If he breaks through the netting and the lights don't stop him, I can obtain a permit to kill him.

Well I am glad that ODNR will work with you. Most of the time they don't give two hoots about it! LOL pun slightly intended!

Hopefully no more duck meals for him.

Oh in other news did you and Josh set a date yet for the wedding?? I can't remember if you posted it or not?!

no date set yet. We're still debating on it.

I hate he chose my calls for a snack! They're expensive and hard to raise! Figures. If i have to obtain a permit, he told me I have to obtain it federally. They can not issue it. He said, and I looked it up, that I have to prove that I've harassed the bird in an attempt to get rid of him before they'll issue a permit.

I know your calls are beautiful! I do believe they make it hard for you to get a permit because then people wouldn't get one

I also was concerned with the possibility of them being used for fighting. Then I was freaked out by a friend at work (I work at a vet clinic) who volunteers at the Franklin county dog shelter, who pointed out it is equally as likely they could be used as bait for dog fighting! She said they will take any free animals (including whole litters of puppies/ kittens) just to give their dogs more killing experience. Its a sick world. I'm starting to think we might just keep them. Besides, I'm pretty sure I heard 2 other roos nearby when I got up earlier than usual for kids first day back to school! So we won't be the only annoying neighbors anymore. I knew there were chickens, but the roos are newer. Maybe I'll just build another much larger coop &fenced in area for the boys &give the smaller moveable coop for the button quail my daughter is adamant she IS getting. Didn't realize how sentimental I was about those two silly roos!

That's horrible. And I know, most roos are gorgeous and it's hard to get rid of them. We've been very lucky, I've been able to rehome 17 of ours over the years. It's way too easy to get attached to them, too. I visited a friend recently who has one of ours...he's drop dead gorgeous and I want him back, lol! (Not). Anyway, there's lots of good suggestions in here. You just have to use your good judgement, hope they do well, and forget about it, if you decide to rehome them. Good luck with them! You should visit Swappers Days anyway in Johnstown, it's a fun weekend.

Thanks! And yes, will definitely go to swappers days anyways. We're only 15 min away and somehow have never made it. Weird, cause I LOVE flea markets and yard sales! Will post again when new news about the boys fates. Thanks again to all for the support and advice!

Minihorse I was going to go with great horned owl for $200, but you beat me to it before I could respond. I take it some of your birds sleep out, or are somehow otherwise exposed at night ?

my laying flock and my calls run loose after breeding season inside a 30X30 pen 6 foot tall. Plus there is a 30X40 barn attached. Never had anything climbing over, had some issues with coons climbing under but we solved that was some electric wire. They all sleep inside the barn at night but apparently the owl swoops in and strolls in to pick his snack! I'm putting a top on it, hoping it works. If not, I'm getting a permit and going owl hunting!

If you are going to wire the top, yeah the flagging wouldn't hurt. It will not last that long before deteriorating anyway, but I have seen were great horns would land on the top, and pull the heads off of pheasants when they freaked out and bounced of the top.
