OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Ha! I just went to Google Images to see what a "peafowl" is?!!! (I thought it was some kinda mini-chicken.) It shows me it's
a Peacock!!! Is that right!!??? I think here in Arkansas, the state requires a special permit to have them. I've wondered many times, never researched it, but, do they require a special permit there, in Ohio?

Dang....I'm jealous! We talked a while back and found out we needed permits and haven't done anything. Just down the road from where we live is a resort that has a huge pen of exotic birds and free running peacocks. We go down there and check them out, once in a while, I think it may be easier to let them raise those birds and we can enjoy them. We would have to do alot of research and figure out what we'd have to do to make it predator safe and all....lots of work to plan. I'd love to see some pics posted from anyone who have a bunch of mixed birds. I'm currently looking into goats, think I'll have to take it one thing at a time. Pictures may get my interests to spread out into more kinds of birds to raise. I ran into a place up the road that was raising turkeys. I'd never seen a live one.....I went to talk to these people about polish chickens, I was told I could go see them. One of those giant, beautiful colored turkeys walked around the building towards me......scared the skin off me, almost!!!! That was one big, (GIANT) SCAREY bird for a little country girl like me (I never guessed it look like that!) this one was so ugly, yet, beautifully colored. I might like one if I raised it from a baby....I don't know, I'd have to think about that. Hubby would have a lot to get used to....hahahahaa....he's a bit timid around a big dog, let alone a full grown turkey!!! hahahahh

Oh goodness....I so love this thread, I'm addicted to it!! I have got to get off here for the night but I so don't want too! I have some things to do before I call it a night, so, I will be back on here tomorrow night to read your post. Darnit...I'd like to stay on here. I really appreciate you coming back in here to tell me about your "works" there. I will be on again tomorrow, Thanks and I will catch up later!!
G-nite ya'all!!

Hey!!!  Thanks so much!  I had no idea.  I've seen alot of people have these animals but I always thought they were for entertainment. Just never thought about selling and all that.  Hubby and I are talking about all this and we have another question (hope I'm not bugging you by all these questions!)  But, we were just wondering...I always knew people went duck hunting and ate them and like, I've heard of eating a goose at Christmas....now, is it the duck or the goose that is a little greasy meat...or am I wrong, but that's what I heard....we have no idea, having never ate them.  And, do people eat ducks they raise!!?  And, if the animals are home raised vs. wild, are the ones home raised still greasy?  LOL   I know I must sound like a numbskull....hahahaee....honestly, we are that "duh" about these types of animals.  (still laughin....hahahhaaee)  Sorry!!   hahahhaee

We will be butchering our first geese later this week. Mine will be slow roasted in the electric roaster pan. I'll let you know how that goes.

Peafowl is the formal name. Peacocks are the males. Peahens are the females. Peachicks are unsexed babies. I have my first pair & will hopefully be hatching chicks soon. Ohio doesn't require permits for peafowl.
You need permits for certain kinds of pheasants, native wild ducks, native wild geese, native wild turkeys & some kinds of quail.

My turkeys are big spoiled babies. They follow me around like puppies & will walk right into the house if the door isn't closed quickly enough. I have several I can walk right over & pick up & stand there & pet like dogs. They are beautiful. The toms' heads turn some really awesome colors as their moods change too.

Goats are on the list next. I need them for milk & to mow 2 steep banks at my new place.

Hi! I've been reading your posts. I'd love to raise all the animals you do. Maybe I wouldn't have to work for someone else!! I'd be in my element if I could stay home, work with my animals and sell from them. When I had my chickens before we did sell chicks and eggs, just wasn't making enough to count for more than feed. I could stand having a full barnyard and selling from it. Sounds like you've got it going on! I cannot even imagine having a turkey follow me around, picking it up like a dog!! hahahhaa that just sounds freaky

(makes me wonder what my dogs would think of a turkey, it would be bigger than my dogs....they would freak! Heck, my husband would freak...this could be sooo fun!!! I don't know, will have to think about this. I spoke to one of the ladies who owned the goats that I visited. She and her hubby are doing like you are. She has ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens, goats, rabbits and more! She sells from all of them....I told her that I would bring hubby and come out to house and buy fresh eggs (getting hubby to go see the goatsI will have to figure what this could do for me. Sounds like fun work to me. I so want to do this!

I forgot to mention that I'd love to know how the geese turn out in the roaster. I don't have a pond, I imagine I'd have to have some baby pools for ducks and geese. And, probably have to have a large closed in pen? Otherwise, won't they fly away? I'll have to study up on them. You mentioned getting goats to put out on your steep banks, I think about getting them to put them out cleaning up my forest. Then, someone mentioned to me that I'd have to make sure the foilage isn't poisonous for them. hmmmmm...will have to check into what is poisonous for them. Our land is wild and no one has ever cleaned out any of it. I love to go out and clear and mow but I thought about goats to do it for me. And, I could enjoy them too. I have to talk to the goat lady I met. She had cleared pastures and pen areas for hers. I don't know, a lot to figure out first.

Most geese and larger breed ducks can not fly. So no worries there. My call and mandarins do fly. Mallards fly. Miniature Appleyards fly. Australian spotted fly. There are many others that fly.

As far as a pen you want something safe from predators just like chickens. Ducks and geese don't need as much shelter as chickens do. Most people just have a lean to type shelter for them. They love it when it rains and they made anything into mud if given the chance. They're so much fun and so entertaining. Duck eggs are great for baking too.

Thanks so much for the info!! I think I would absolutely have a blast with ducks. I heard there was a lady out in the near countryside who has ducks. I think I will have to go pay her visit. I was told she has quite a menagerie of animals. I'm gonna hogtie hubby and have him go visit her with me. I think the ducks would be an easy keep for us. Probably have to have a separate pen for chickens and ducks? I would think so. I like the idea of the duck eggs and baking....but, aren't duck eggs huge in comparison to chicken eggs. (I've never seen a duck egg....hahha....for real, I have not.) so if a recipe calls for 2 eggs....do you use 1 duck egg....or what? And, can you fry up a duck egg for breakfast, like we eat regular eggs......do they taste the same? or are they tough.....hahhaah.....gosh, I must sound funny.....I'm laughin at myself....oh, boy! I really have no idea... (more research to do...) I really don't mean to be overly ignorant....this is just too exciting and you don't know me....I was a small town girl....way tooo sheltered. There was a man , named Alvey, across the road from my childhood home who had a big barnyard....I remember pigs, cows and guineas. My brother and I (young around 7 &8), we would sneak across the road and there was high grass around the barnyard fence. We would tramp down the tall grasses, making ourselves a "cabin" and spend the day, laying around watching the animals.....what a great memory. Anyway, I've never been around ducks to every learn anything about them. I've never even thought about raising them until the past few days, reading these posts. I know I would love em. Hubby says I am a farmer, at heart! For sure!!
