. I know I don't post whole lot but I do lurk quite a bit. A few days ago my entire flock ( 4 one year old hens and 12 rare layer assortment from Meyer 5 weeks old) were killed by our neighbors dog. My son (7yo) looked out his window and screamed to me that the dog was killing them first thing in the morning. I was able to catch the dog and lock it up thank goodness. Well the county took the neighbor to court and ordered restitution but she doesn't have to pay till January 2016! I have been just sick over it for the past few day. Neighbor did come over and acted like I shouldn't have chickens for her dog to be tempted by and gave a very unapologetic response. That was only after I explained that my chickens are properly confined unlike her dog. So now I'm trying to rebuild my flock slowly but surely. If anyone has any 5 week old pullets, or hens less than a year around Toledo let me know, I'm looking

thinking about getting an incubator so maybe even hatching eggs.

My response to dogs running loose & bothering my properly confined animals is a shotgun blast. You have the right to shoot any predator (domestic or otherwise) that attacks your livestock. I would be reminding the neighbor of this fact. My son has rolled more than 1 roaming mutt that crossed into our yard & went after our animals.

As for replacing birds, I have some rainbow chicks under 7 weeks old available & more hatching. I'm near Cambridge but have to come as far north as Canton on Wed next week. Let me know if you're interested.

So sorry about your loss.  I have been fortunate enough to get neighbors who do not like dogs and somehow don't mind roosters crowing at 5am.  I do hush them with lots of free eggs, however.  Maybe next time you talk to your neighbor, you could offer to share some eggs once you get your new flock and they're laying.  It might give her more incentive to hurry up with reparations.

Any idea on type?  Large fowl?  Layers?  If breed is unimportant, I'm sure someone could supply you with some fertile "barnyard mix" eggs fairly easily.  I breed Silkies mostly, but I have tons of other birds of various ancestry.  If you don't find someone closer, let me know.  I am in Southern Ohio.

We usually try to spoil the neighbors with eggs, but this is that one neighbor that really isn't very neighborly, ever. We've tried in the past to offer eggs and she always refuses. She's across the road so we normally don't have a lot of contact with (which i don't mind). I'm looking for egg layers of various sorts. I had such a nice mix, it was almost the ideal flock. I even had a whole rainbow of eggs, the only coor I was missing was olive. I would be interested in more ee, marans, deleware, gold laced Wyandottes, orpingtons all kinds.

Sorry, about your loss. I have entirely too much experience with neighbor's roaming animals. I found a large role of 6 foot chicken wire with 2 inch holes on craigslist and used it to cover my pens. Don't know where to buy that new though.
I have 5 Polish chicks left to sell. They are all under 5 weeks. I usually have a surplus of barnyard mix eggs too if you are interested. I'm in Ashland county.

Yeah we've put up 6 foot chain link and buried about a foot and a half of chicken wire. Still thinking about covering the run, just not sure what to cover it with. Any suggestions?

I used deer netting. A little thinner but defininatly cheaper then bird netting or deer block. I got mine at Home Depot for about $20 for a 7' wide 100' long roll. The other stuff is $70 for the same amount. I used one roll to cover my 16' x16.5' run area. It's even double layered over almost the whole run. So far so good.

I would really like to just put 6 foot chain link up all around the yard and let them run during the day and put them in at night. Anyone do that? We usually put them in at night anyways. I don't know if they would stay within the fence though. With the chicken wire fence we used to have they stayed in because I clipped their wings, but would more freedom cause them to try to jump a fence?

No idea. LOL I've only had chickens about a month. This will be my first winter. I do think the snow will go through though. Even layered the holes are fairly large. It does catch the little "helicopters" from the tree near by. I shake it a little and the girls are excited as treats from the sky.
