Winter I'm not sure of. All my project birds will have their own coop. I thought about making breeding pens in the coop until I can make another coop. Like a large dog cage with a wooden top. I left room at one side of the coop to build another just for breeding but now with having 3 different ones I want to breed it makes it hard. My extra coop all depends on what we are going to do with our roo. I can't let him free range with the cockerels because as soon as they hit the juvinille stage he started attacking. My husband doesn't want to send him to freezer camp and I am waiting for the other to become his age so they have a fighting chance.

On the bright side of all my confusion, my ccl eggs made it to the post office and I'm just waiting for my phone call.

I use these for bantam breeding pens, 3 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet high. for larger birds I would go 3x4x3. for a pair or trio. if they are going to be in your coop plywood would be fine for the roof.

Ill probably use a couple of bigger cages. I am hoping that my two hatches come out pretty well. I've been researching more and more about hatching. Lol I have been having talks with my youngest about not keeping everything we hatch if we have a good hatch. I told her we have to sell some to feed all the babies and to buy more eggs.

Speaking of selling. How do you figure out your prices? My friend told me to research availability and want, but I can't really find much on choc orps around me. On top of that they will be 4-6 weeks before I sell them and sexed. The only ones I could find were day old and straight run for $20. The CCLs I found are $35 each in Ky. Both of my sets of eggs come from breeders from greenfire or Marc something (can't remember the last name). CCL are becoming more and more common I see. I just loved the look of the roo.

Hi I am with CF Farm. I am new to the forum. I raise blue and black copper marans along with my husband. They look like blue marans to me. are the under feathers yellow or blue? if they are blue they will be solid blue marans all of mine have a yellow underneath at first and the solid blue are all powder blue.

I went once, its over an hour away. It was ok, but there weren't many people there. It could have been due to the fact it was one of the first meets of the year. If my brooders weren't full as well as my incubator I'd be going there this weekend. maybe after everything hatches and moves ill be up there again with babies to sell

Welcome CS Farm! Wish joined a few weeks ago--you could have helped me with the Marans chicks I ordered from a breeder/hatchery in Michigan....I'd wanted Black Copper Marans, but the next hatch date wasn't until a month after I'd hoped to have chicks (to be mature enough for daughter's 4-H fair production project)..so they offered to substitute Blue Coppers and Wheatens, both of which I also love so of course I agreed!

They sent me a mixture of 10 straight run chicks and I have had a heckuva time figuring out which is which! I do know which are the boys (of course more of those than girls) but the blue is so confusing to me since I have at least 5 cockerals: A splash cockeral, three that appear to be Blue Coppers(with the copper head and sort of black back blending into the dark blue belly) and another that truly looks to be Blue Copper except he is a gorgeous blue hue all over.

First I'd like to know who is what...and second...is there anybody who might be interested in these boys? They are beautiful, but I also have two Bluebell (cross between RIR and Black Copper Marans) cockerals, they are a blue splash, and most likely 1-2 Easter Egger cockerals...they all must go! Would love to find them homes where they could be who they are, hate to raise them and send them to freezer camp--don't really have the set-up for them and we have to have space for the 4-H broilers coming in a month...

I'll be posting on the for sale page also, but since I'm not shipping I thought I'd see if I had any Buckeye "neighbors" that might be interested

I'd be happy to drive or meet within a reasonable distance of Delaware County...

I'd like $10 for any of the Marans ( a little less than I paid for them as day old chicks





...just trying to recoup some of the expenses)...or I'd be open to swapping for pullets (and color Marans, Cream Legbars, Speckled Sussex, Sultan, Ameraucana, Blue or Chocolate Orps....and so on) and $5 for the Bluebells and EE's...and am open to ideas.






We're heading out of town at the end of the month so want them gone by then if possible to make life easier on the house-sitters.

there aren't many chocolate orps around here that I know of. im ashamed to admit I cant figure out what CCL are LOL. I don't have a "set method" for figuring my prices but I can give you an idea of where my prices come from.

I add the cost of my parent stock together, then figure the feed cost (4oz/day bantams, 8oz/day large fowl). I take in account how many eggs a week the hens should lay, and figure a hatch rate as a per breed basis. (cochins have the lowest hatch factor for me, low fertility if their butts aren't trimmed, very broody-so not many eggs)
in one month of good laying your chickens should be able to pay for themselves in chicks. figure $0.25 for actual hatch cost - some people say more.

example 1:
breed is white rock standard, medium quality. hen and rooster price is $10.00 each for breeder's stock. this will be a trio. I think of these as common birds, easily obtainable so price reflects this.

cost of parent stock $30
cost of feed for 1 month $13 my feed is a special mix at $13 for 50 lbs. I rounded this up.
cost of parent stock is $46

estimated number of hatched eggs would be 4 per hen per week. or 8 eggs a week. for a total of 36 eggs (months I figure as 4.5 weeks) with the cost of hatching being $9.00.

total cost $55 feed and hatching
divide by number of chicks (36)

makes the price of the chick $1.53

example 2:
breed is lemon cuckoo orpington standard, high breeder quality. hen and rooster as chicks $20 + $7 yearly raising fee. this will be 1 rooster and 5 hens. (I got lucky on a straight run) I think of these as rare and in demand birds. so I mark them up depending on rarity.

cost of parent stock $162
cost of feed for 1 month $26
cost in parent stock $188

estimated number of hatched eggs would be 3.5 per hen per week. for a total of 18 chicks per week, or 8 chicks. hatching fee is 20.00

total cost is $208 for feed and hatching
divide by the number of chicks (80)

makes the chick price $2.60 on these I don't offer wholesale and mark the price up to $6 - $8 because of demand/rarity. as adults I can normally get $50 a bird pretty easily on good quality birds.

I also look at the normal market value, and price with the lowest price I can find as long as I can make money. if I feel like the price is highway robbery I will mark them down sometimes for friends, with the agreement that if something happens to my flock they will help me re - establish my breeders.
