Well, actually, it's a RIR/brussbar cross but basically the same general idea :) The big advantage with the Rhodebars is they breed true -- you don't have to cross-breed every generation to get the autosexing. They're wonderful birds! I have a heck of a time deciding on my favorite breed of chicken but they're definitely way up there.

from Mansfield!

great! Maybe one day I'll get into breeding chickens. For now, I'm looking forward to eggs starting in August. Yum!

Oh, I didn't breed these -- well, not as in creating the Rhodebars myself. The parents (the egg's parents, I mean -- my current birds) are from Greenfire Farms. Waiting for a few more eggs and then I'll incubate for fertility!

And oh heck yes! The difference between home-raised eggs and store eggs is unbelievable!!

Now I want an omelette...

a true rhodebar is bred from rhode island red and brussbar. brussbars are a nearly extinct English breed with less than 20 known survivors today. several people have tried to recreate them from rhode island red crossed with barred Plymouth rocks, but they aren't the same. the type is wrong and feather patterns wont match to the standard.

Thank you for the info. Very interesting.

I looked at the pictures in the email. they are using a red Sussex with a darkening gene (cant remember the gene name but I can look it up if needed). a true brown Sussex is different from a red Sussex. but the reds are the closest thing we have now... I may order some eggs to try and sort through. did they give you a price on hatching eggs?

ill have to check and see how many I can get, the price is reasonable enough. its not impossible to breed some good birds from what they are doing, just going to take a lot of sorting.

Just got my first Rhodebar egg!!!

Sorry I haven't been on much at all -- it seems no matter how much I do these days I am always behind! Drives me crazy. CrazyChick, be careful! Silkies will steal your heart :)
That is great! With all the talk about breeding I want some of these birds now! but I don't know anything about breeding what chickens with what to get this.. ugh too much to learn.

rhodebar, is rhode island red over brussbar. the price of the chicks and eggs are starting to come down a little bit. its probably easier and cheaper to buy them than create them now. some people have also tried rhode island red over barred rock, if I were trying that I would probably cross a partridge rock to a white rock, and then to a barred rock for proper coloration. of course I might be nuts. also they self sexing abilities of this cross usually don't work after first generation crossing. with the brussbars it is supposed to be auto sexing.

breeding takes a little studying and a lot of practice. you will learn as you go, and most people on here will do their best to give you good information.
