OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Yes, I know who lives on the corner of Hartford and 605 in condit. I don't think they are on this list. Actually, they just built that enclosure about two weeks ago. I live on out Hartford road from there about a mile

Give them my compliments. Very impressive facility.

What are they keeping? I couldn't tell from Condit Rd. if they were Doms or Barred rocks along with what looked like Golden Comets?

rhodebar, is rhode island red over brussbar. the price of the chicks and eggs are starting to come down a little bit. its probably easier and cheaper to buy them than create them now. some people have also tried rhode island red over barred rock, if I were trying that I would probably cross a partridge rock to a white rock, and then to a barred rock for proper coloration. of course I might be nuts. also they self sexing abilities of this cross usually don't work after first generation crossing. with the brussbars it is supposed to be auto sexing.

breeding takes a little studying and a lot of practice. you will learn as you go, and most people on here will do their best to give you good information.

Eventually I'll be selling hatching eggs and chicks locally -- for a lot less than GF prices

lol!

There's two types of breeding, really -- one is selecting to maintain an existing breed to standard while improving on health, vigor, looks, and utility as much as possible. Then there's breeding to create a new breed or new variety or "lock in" the traits of a variety in progress -- that's a lot more complicated! With what I do it's fairly easy to select out faults and remove them from the breeding stock. Only problem comes when a particular bird has traits you really want to keep in the line but an obvious fault like leg color or poor conformation -- then it becomes a matter of weighing trade-offs and what you can correct for in the next generation...

ive been selling them for a little while now. problem is, word of mouth advertisement was better than I expected. I ran an add on craigslist fairly early this year and didn't expect the number of calls. I ended up ordering from another hatchery in bulk just to fill the orders. i didn't make any money on what i ordered, but i did on my own chicks.

my problem was i figured people would buy like i did, 10 of this and 10 of that, maybe 5 of these and 8 of those. my first call was for 150 barred rocks, i only had a breeding quad i had selected to keep. im pretty much spending the summer and fall hatching to select again, and on a lot of common breeds im going to have to keep more. next issue becomes housing all of these birds, but i think we have talked about this before LOL.

it is fun and rewarding to breed birds, i encourage people to try it; and to have fun with it. just remember it becomes addictive. i have seriously thought of just breeding common breeds for egg size and color. of course you would choose for health first.

Ye gods!!! I'd be totally sunk if somebody wanted that many birds. I'd have to simply decline -- there'd be no way. Definitely small-scale operation here :) I'm trying to keep between 4-6 hens of the breeds I want to raise for sale, and only one roo per breed (trying to be considerate of the neighbors!) I keep re-selecting each generation and selling off my extras to try and keep the numbers down...

that is almost the same idea i started with. the biggest issue i had was when i lost a rooster. some of them are hard to replace!

you and i are going to have to meet up one day. i would love to exchange some ideas with you.

Hi Delcochix. I don't know what they have. I've known them for about 30 years. To chit chat and say hi. But really don't know them on a personal basis. I might stop down there some day. The house on the corner is the son and his wife and the house behind it is the parents that I know. Very nice people. The house on the corner used to be the aunt and uncle. They have passed away and the son moved in. Plus the own the house next to the house on the corner on Hartford road. Too much info?? Haha

I may have to just pop in and say hi. I live in Marengo (a little ways down from BlessedChick) but go to church in Johnstown, so it's not even out of my way to pop in. I've been know to stop and talk to complete strangers often.

And for anyone in driving distance of Morrow Co. this Saturday they are having a Food Drive in Mt. Gilead in conjunction with the Farmer's Market. See: http://www.localharvest.org/event.jsp?id=55973 for more info. I won't be there because I'm helping with a 4H fundraiser, but some of you probably know some of the folks that will be selling.

So today one if my babies hatched! I missed it I heard it all day thinking nothing would happen! I know I am supposed to sit on my hands it's so hard it looks like something is stuck and dragging the shell around. Is that the cord? I've never done this so I am so excited!
