OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

ive been talking to a few people about their mites and lice problems. just so you guys know, some people don't worry about treating their birds for this. sometimes they are a result of each other, or other parasite infections. a good happy healthy chicken can have them and never show symptoms unless you look for the bug and its eggs.

on chicks i just use 7 dust, i dust the chicks and whole coop or brooder. i use the ivomec on my adults.

at any time if you notice mucus in the feathers around the wings, keep an eye out for mites and lice. there is a mite that attacks in cool weather, so this is year long.

if your chickens cant dust bathe the chances of you having it are even worse.

if your chickens are dust bathing more than usual, look at the vent for signs of these bugs.

make sure to treat your coop when treating birds, you'll never get rid of them if you don't.

when treating for them, i typically use some vitamins and electrolytes mix in their water; and give lots of high protein treats.

some other signs of them, itching when you leave the chicken coop, especially after handling a chicken. drop in egg production, eating and drinking more than normal, lots of scratching, and small black spots on comb and wattles. extreme cases cause weight loss and can kill chickens and chicks.

Thanks for the info Brian. I am new to chickens and never gave this a thought. What do you do for flies? My coop is terrible every since I got the chickens a flock block. I keep sprinkling DE in the coop. Putting out fly strips and vanilla trees, air fresheners, next trip out there. Thanks, Jane

Mini horse, I checked my polish and it looks like I have all pullets. I sure hope so. Thanks so much for your help and the pics. Jane

I have been trying to find something that i can use for lock down on quail eggs. I have 9 eggs i think it is. I have a Farm Innovator and I am thinking of finding something to make rows (card board or something) so that when hatch day comes around on the 20th they won't bump the eggs all around. If the quail eggs hatch on the 16th though, I need a game plan. I had thought about getting a cheap cooler, heating pad with a light. I know I won't need anything big. My DH mentioned one of those cheap school project ones for $20 but I don't know if that would work. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I am not crafty.. and I am not creative =)

do you have one of those boxes like checks used to come in? you can use one of those with a piece of wire on top. i have also used 4 strips of strong cardboard taped together. those quail are a lot like pinballs when they hatch, and for such a small bird they are hard to hold onto.

for flies i use fly tape. make sure to dispose of all carcasses - i burn mine. the dryer you can keep the chickens, the less flies you will have. anytime bedding starts to smell, change it.

i don't use it, but they say golden malrin fly poison works well.

ACV also seems to help aid in smells, mix it in water 1/4 cup to 5 gallons of water and use it once a week.

Ugh.

My husband told me about 20 min ago that the hawk (that we used to see regularly but haven't for a while) was back, that he saw him earlier today. I immediately went outside. I heard the chickens having a FIT. I ran down (barefoot) and one if our polish girls was ON TOP of the coop! No idea how she got up there, I have never seen her so much as flap more than to just stretch everything out...
2 silkies one our rooster, are now missing, and our huge brown leghorn! UGH.

I saw the silkie rooster running as I was running down... Surely trying to protect his girls.....

Hubby is now down looking in the woods, (I have to sit with the kiddos) we are right behind him but probably too late :'( UGH

The female silkie that's missing was the roosters FAVORITE!

:( :( :( :(
Oh no! Fingers crossed for you!
