OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I'm on chick overload right now. Lol there are officially 30 chicks in my garage. My DH is freaking out. We bought some probiotics and electrolytes to put in their water because we have lost two little ccls boys who were smaller than everyone else. I am buying another tote to make a 4th brooder so I can split them up even more. This way I can watch everyone closer an let my daughter pick the ones she wants and have them in a separate brooder.

I did officially get some pullets into the big coop without any blood shed. It has been a week with them being in there. I have another batch of Tweens I am moving out to the big coop who are off lights. Lol as soon as I get some out of the garage I'm putting more in the garage. DH is not happy with me at all. But I just ignore him and go on my way. He always says "we decided no more chickens in the garage". Nope never a we just a he. I tell him I agree just to shut him up. :D thankfully he loves me and goes with the flow (with a lot of complaining).

anyone (particulary in NW ohio) mix their own feed and use fishmeal? Do you use organic fish? If so where did you get it? I got regular fish meal last time but was wondering if organic fish was available nearby...

if your on "chick overload" I wonder where that puts me? ive quit putting eggs in the incubator, my wife and I have been tossing up the idea of selling out and fully retiring. chicks and all we are at about 650 birds right now. one more small group to hatch, and if I decided to set them another 18-20 dozen eggs to go in the incubator.

if I had to guess, Andersons would have it. there is a large egg farm up around Toledo somewhere, they may know.

i don't use fish meal in my mix, there are better sources of protein for chickens.

Hey everybody! Oh my gosh, I'm behind. I've been flat out and will be for a while yet, dang it. Chickawawa, I'll have basque hatching eggs fairly soon. The one girl who's laying has already been fertility-tested, and Roo is doing his job :) The rhodebars are up and running, big-time -- a ton of them in the incie cooking, and I'm on my way out to take pictures and then post some eggs on the 24-hour auction thread!

Hi everyone. New guy here trying to get his chicks in a row. :)

Are there any breeders in SW Ohio I can contact? I'm just southeast of Dayton. I'm leaning towards starting with pullets instead of chicks since this is our first experience. A small flock of five hens is our target and I'd love some mix of Easter Eggers, Australorps, RIR, Plymouth Rock.

After months of reading and research, I think I finally have my coop and run design finished and its time to start building. It'll probably go slow since I'll only hammer on nights and weekends so Im guessing I have a little time yet.

Any advice or local resources I can bug? :)

Thanks.

Hi Mike! I'm not too far from you in Shelby County (right up 75). Welcome to the Forum... and chickens!

My advice would be familiarize yourself with what lice and mites look like on chickens, watch out for pasty vent and runny noses or sneezing and just look for general wellness in the birds you pick. Ask lots of questions of the sellers. Look at general cleanliness of the farm. You don't want to bring home someone else's problem. Would probably be best, if possible, to get all your birds from one place to minimize exposure to different diseases.

As for breeders in your area, can't be of much help unfortunately but we are probably looking at the same Craigslist ads. I know there are a couple people on here from Germantown, Moraine and Franklin as well as quite a few south of there. We got a wonderful Speckled Sussex roo from a breeder in Moraine but I don't remember what other breeds they were working with besides that.

Best of luck in your new endevour! I wish I would have known someone from here was looking for Easter Eggers! Just sold mine at auction last weekend!

Could I talk you into hatching some Basque out for me and I'll buy the chicks? We have set two clutches of eggs under broodies 2 different times with 0% success. I think hatching may not be the way to go for us!

Oh heck, yeah -- I love hatching! Pm me and we'll get it organized :)

Same goes for the rhodebars, if anyone wants chicks -- I gotta start thinking about pricing and stuff. But I'm happy to hatch, and happy to deliver within a reasonable distance for a fee.

Finally got some rhodie pictures taken!
