OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

7 dust will only work on external parasites. (i know this will start an argument) DE is worthless for chicken parasites, i have recently done alot of research on it. they only way it will kill lice and mites is if you literally smother them with it, as far as worms you would have to feed so much to the chicken that it would kill it by either dehydration or internal bleeding. however small amounts of DE in the water will help with feed to weight gain ratios, and may strengthen bones in cornish rocks.

you can try tobacco, make sure its dry. break up a cigarette onto a piece of paper. when the tobacco crumbles easily, crumble it into small (pepper sized) pieces. sprinkle small amounts onto the feed. use as small amounts as you think is sufficient, chickens can overdose on nicotine pretty easily. egg withdraw is one week

unfortunately no matter what you use to treat for worms- if it is effective its a poison. you will have to throw them out for a period of time.

someone else may have better advice on this, but if they arent looking sickly or expelling worms i wouldnt treat. some worms are good for chicken health, just like some bacteria are good for us. most chickens will have a few worms, sometimes its more risky to use a poison to get rid of them than it is to leave them.

I understand about the controversy on certain topics. We all know! So no arguing please!

My flock seems to be very healthy and I haven't seen any evidence of worms. The tobacco thing is interesting. I read the link cluckitall posted for me about worms. It was very informative. I may do some of it on the ones I brought home from the swap. Just for the stress issue, not because I think they have a problem.

I appreciate everyones advice. I will give it all much thought and decide what I think is necessary. Brian, will you and the Mrs be at Lucasville? We are thinking of coming. Shaybaby said she will be there. If anyone else is planning on being there, maybe we all could meet just to say hey and see each other again and check out any stock they may bring. Just a thought. It may not work out, but would be fun!

we will probably go, but we usually go on friday evening. the prices are higher, but the selection is so much better. we sometimes go on saturday too. i would love to catch up with everyone down there.

Molting would be a great time to do it!  That way you do not have to worry about eggs being trashed.  I would do the younger ones, just base the dosage off of their size.  If they are tiny like bantams than use the .25CC dose.  My d'uccle who were only about 12 weeks at the time did fine with the .25CC dose and they are tiny.  I did my 16+ week old large fowl birds at the .5CC dosage and they took it fine.  The three older one you got from me were done 3 weeks ago today so you can do them if you want again but I did treat them already.  I do not treat chicks less than 6 weeks so the little ones of course were not done.

You could treat everyone except for the one(s) who are laying and that way you still get your egg and then do those birds later when they molt.  This method only works of course as long as you do not have external parasites that can go from bird to bird.
Oh i forgot. I just squirt this at the base of their neck between where the shoulder blades would be. Make sure you get it on the skin, don't just squirt it on the feathers.

Ok. Thanks. Will start this weekend. I wanted to ask you how old are the ee's? So you are going to the Delaware and Lucasville? I probably won't be able to go to Delaware, but maybe I could ask you to pick me up a couple of blessedchicks showgirls? I would like to have 2-3 of them, depending on the price. She is hatching out some for the swap. If you can do that for me, I will get with her and see about the arrangements.

i forgot to mention earlier, our eggs came in today. 1 dozen buff laced brahmas, 1 dozen rhodebars, and 6 breeda. i hope they hatch well.

some of the other newbies are laying, russian orloffs, jersey giants, lemon cuckoo orps, and i expect a salmon faverolle any day now. i know i should be shutting the incubator down, but how can i resist?

EIS - Empty Incubator Syndrome. I have it already and I've only recently been bitten by the bator-bug. :gig Nice selection there! Good luck with the hatch!
