I just automatically factor it in at this point! Your fencing solution is electronetting though. It teaches dogs to fly! And seriously, it does train all your big four-footed predators--think shock collar. I work full time, so come winter I never see my chickens in the daylight. I have to let them out before dawn and close them up after sunset. The only thing I worry about though is their water freezing.

Your right. We started out with the electronetting and we are still using it although the electric part isn't working. The solar battery quit working a few years back but it does work great when there is electric to it!

For those that have used the electronetting, did you do any kind of "roof/cover/hawk protection"? We have a LOT of hawks here. You can't look up without seeing one, and can see them nesting in the trees all around. I'm not sure how you would go about adding a top to that sort of fencing.

We've not had to cover ours. We have an occasional hawk. We've lost a few from them I think. You might be able to put bird netting over and attach it on the posts maybe with zip ties. I love zip ties!!
I'm sure some one will have a better idea.
 
I'm bringing a pair of rhodebars to the swap. Around 11weeks old. Think they will sell? I just need to downsize for winter. Plus the extra cash is greatly needed here.

On a good note, Buck is really working his hind legs especially after we got the new pasture up today and mostly finished. He has to walk through tall thick grass so he has to pick his hind legs up. He walked a good 300 feet without locking up. I need to get some more stuff for the fence. I'm going to try a solar charger on it. I've got a 100mile AC charger but am going to exchange it for the solar. I need to get 2 ground rods and ground rod clamps a splicer so I can finished the end of the run, a nut cause I lost one from one of the other splicers, a quick link to connect enough chain for the gate, uhm I think that's it. I had 2 horses turned out in it today without any electric and it held them so it works as is. A 7 year long project finished! I tried to get my ex to help build it for years and never could. Josh and I started it last year but couldn't dig the holes for fence post so had to give up. Now I've got one more small paddock out front to finish and I'm pretty well done with pasture. If we get done with that then I can put all the horses out and have no one in the barn! Going to haul into brown county fair tomorrow afternoon. Show Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Got a huge pickup truck load of bulk shavings today too for $15. I've had a great day!

:woot We have electric fencing for our horses and I love it. We have both a solar and ACcharger and both have pros and cons. Solar is nice in the summer, but we ran it last winter before we got the electric ran to the field and eh..the horses wised up to the fact it wasn't charging and they could lift it right up and go for a joy-run. We spent a lot of time last winter chasing horses and fixing fence lines. :P The electric is so convenient, though (unless you forget it's on and try going through the fence!), we're always expanding the fence line since we can pull up and "replant" a T post in seconds and rerun the wire. Not the prettiest of fencing (unless you get the spiffy thicker tape stuff), but cheap and easy.

see, my front pasture has a 10 mile AC charger but of course it's close to the barn so easy access to electric. The backnpasture I could do a 25mile charger in the garage and run underground wire and put a cut out switch (to kill the electric at the fence when needed) at the gate entrance but I think the solar will be ok. It's a mix of permanent barbless cable and electrobraid poly rope fence. My horses don't push the fence even with the electric off but it's that added "security" factor I like. It's more to keep stuff out than in here.
