OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

If you breed them to a showgirl you can get more show girls. That's why i was going to let shay use my roo for her hen if she wanted. That way she coups get some more show girl chicks started before winter.

That is very good to know! Decisions, decisions!!! Eggs from blessedchick, wait until spring to hatch my own or get them from shay when she gets some!!!

I went back to the swap again today because I was in denial and had to check again for showgirls :gig (and I decided I did want those button quail after all - but the only 2 I saw selling them had already left - and I wanted to find a silver Sebrite gal for this new rooster - but the only two I saw in the whole place were a pair package deal..). Still no showgirls, and half the vendors had cleared out by 1..shame. I did bring home a free rabbit.. After our last one passed away (presumably of old age) a few days ago and I was going to use the empty hutch for the quail when they mature.. Oh well! I couldn't leave him there looking like he does, poor guy..

Blessedchick, that is so tempting!! I can't remember where you're at. I may have to attempt a bit more sweet talk on the DH.. Muahaha.

Fav girls gave me another egg today. So I'm getting roughly 3-4 a week from 2 hens. C'mon girls... This one was very warm, so it was either fresh from the rear end, or she had started setting it..so I popped it in the bator too. Since I have a spare now I can use as a hatcher... At least one of the first two eggs is fertile! Woooot!

Oh, and if anyone hasn't seen it yet, there was a final update to the Frankenchicky/Derpy thread. Thanks for the kind words, guys. Really means a lot.

HOW do all of my posts turn into college essays!?

And you should start a journal. I don't know if you can print your posts, but that would be a great idea, put them in order and keep them. You have a way of making everyday things sound interesting. I think it would be a great legacy to hand down. I wish I had done this. When you are going thru life, it doesn't seem interesting, but your children and grandchildren will think it interesting. You have a lot already recorded. So you have ahead start! I don't know much about my grandmother's life growing up. My MIL just passed away last Sunday. She was 97. She shared so much of her life with different members of the family. It would be good if we all got together and shared and put them in writing. Maybe we will do that someday!

guys, i see times may be getting rough for everyone here in the very near future. there is some post on facebook about walmart no longer taking wic and food stamps. if people cant buy their food, they will resort to whatever means necessary to feed their families.

because of this, im offering the idea of forming a private co-op between just us and other like minded locals. wondering what everyone else thinks about it and looking for suggestions on how it should be run.

They don't want to mess with my animals and home or food will be their last worry.

basically that we all figure out how to work together and maximize our output. not just with chickens, but possibly corn, milk, garden items, and other things. i dont know how much land each of us has, but i think together we can build a pretty good self sufficient group. possibly with enough overflow to help out other family members or friends in need.

sounds very interesting!! I've often thought of a co-op, but have no clue how to get one going. I will put my two cents in when I see what everyone else comes up with. Hopefully someone on here has had experience with them or knows of someone who has.

i dont have any experience with them either. but i have a few talents i can offer to assist. i do have about an acre of ground (extra) that would be good for above ground crops. im sure i could grow a very healthy crop of green beans on it, tomatoes should do well, squash and peppers should also do pretty good there. im already planning on putting out an acre of self pollinating corn, and a few black oil sunflowers. but i will need pretty much all of that corn myself, i can switch the garden acre to corn if needed.

another thing i had thought about, for people who would do this. i am thinking of hatching out some black sex links and maybe some red sex links. i will have a ton of extra cockerels that i could donate for finishing for meat. i might be able to work out something as a "joining gift" as far as sex link pullets go.

someone would have to be the overseer of this, and i am not the right person - we would need to figure out who would be - maybe by election?

we would also have to figure out values of certain products for trade - for instance a 50 lb bag of corn would be worth about 4 dozen large eggs, 5ish lbs of tomatoes, or one good laying hen. (common breeds)

this is all just a suggestion, i really have no idea of how to do all of this; im waiting to hear what others think too.

Its not that they are going to quit accepting them....the entire state food stamp system was down. As far as WIC....that is one of the government programs that has been put on hold during the shutdown. I was in Walmart today and saw someone use their food stamp card.
