OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Or at least segregate them some. Maybe have the livestock folks concentrated in one part of the Fairgrounds, flea market the other.

Talking to a guy over the weekend, he was looking for a rooster at the Eastgate Feedstore, I don't have a extra roo that i want to let go of just yet.
Tell him these are free, or I'm eating them. Either way, doesn't hurt my feelings. Trying to avoid craigslist route. Someone I know had a guy show up who wanted to buy her roosters just to let his fighting roosters kill them. I'm disgusted with what some do. Even worse is he admitted he was doing it.

I would be tempted to get that guy's name and address and let the authorities know. For a while they were seriously cracking down on cock fighting in Ohio. Glad someone else feels that way about Craigslist...I won't go there to advertise our roosters. I dread the thought of even the Amish auction...though we may go that way eventually. So far we haven't had to. Been able to re-home all our extras

that's why we typically charge a small fee for them if we have to go that route. If they are worth eating we usually just go freezer camp with them.

New to ohio, new to chickens.
I have six pullets (Still trying to reason this law saying minimum of 6 chickens). One looks different from the rest so I am hoping that we accidently got a roo. My hubby is adamant about no roos but I think that he would warm up to one.
I know a chick has to be fully feathered out to do to the outside coop, but what about letting them run during the day? How warm does it have to be if they are in the sun?

Hello & welcome! I don't know the exact reason behind the minimum of six rule but if I had to guess I'd say because they are flock animals. They like to be together and need the company of each other. My baby chicks and adults sleep cuddled together I think for comfort cause they did it in the brooder and in the summer out in the coop.

Chicks can go outside when they have adjusted to the temperature and are fully feathered. I use the 5-ish degrees a week method. If their brooded starts out at 90 degrees you can decrease the temp by raising the heat light away from the brooder a little each week while gradually introducing them to a cooler temp. Later on you can use a cooler part of the house like the basement to get closer to the temp outside. I also pay attention to their behavior. If everyone is huddled under the light not moving around much they're probably cold. If everyone stays as far as can be from the light then they're too hot. If everyone is back & forth from one end to the other they're comfortable. My chicks were born February 14th & 15th I'm hoping to have them outside in May. They will be 3 months old and I'm waiting for the weather to settle & the nights to warm up. If they're already fully feathered and the temp outside is close to what they are used to you could take one outside and see if she seems cold. If she's ok let them get some fresh air. If they're not ready work on it & give it a little longer. It's got to warm up soon!

Don't worry you have 6 now & I bet you'll have more by the end of summer, especially if you get your rooster and hatch your own. They're addictive! I have 23, I call them all my kids lol. Hope this helps!

I believe the six chick minimum deal was a result of chicks chilling and dying before they got home. The thinking being chicks of that number, of greater, stood a better chance of huddling and maintaining enough body heat to get home and back under under heat..

Hi everyone,

I am from Mansfield Ohio and just bought our first 6 chicks from TSC. All 6 are Australorp and supposedly all girls (purchased 3/15) although I have to admit I am beginning to be suspicious about one of them!
