it looks like i have my first broody hen! I had no idea she would...it has been about 3-4 days now i think, but I think she is only sitting on one egg.. should i sneak more under her?
Another hen that hatched the same time as her found a nice hidding place, should i put a few in her spot just in case she goes broody?

Generally they will make a nest for themselves before they go broody. Unless you want her to hatch something else of course. If you let the eggs collect then they will get more interested in becoming broody. Of the one only has one egg I would give her a few more but don't overload her. Ifshe's a first timer, she cab get overwhelmed with the nest and to many chicks.

One thing to keep in mind here. If you add eggs, and leave the original, if fertile, you will have a staggered hatch. This early chick might be able to draw the hen off the nest before the late eggs hatch.

Also if other hens still have access to this nest, some will likely try to keep adding eggs to the clutch. Again resulting in staggered hatch. What can also happen is they overload the broody, eggs on the perimeter of the nest cool and die. When she rolls and rotates eggs, a new batch get cold, often ruining the whole clutch over time.

Hi Buckeyes !! I'm knew here so have been soaking up a lot of egg-citing information. My farm is located in Southern Ohio, Gallia county that borders West Va, and Kentucky. We have 60+ adult chickens, 70+ chicks in the brooder and 30 eggs in the bator. Breeds I have are Rhode island reds, Golden Comets, Barred Rocks, Black Laced Wyandotts, Astrolopes, Light Brahma, Easter Eggers and a few mutts. We sell our x-large and jumbo brown eggs for $2.25 a dozen. We also have Guineas, Pilgrim Geese, and ducks. Egg-cited to find BYC forum !!

Welcome!! Not too far away here, I think. That's a great flock you have there! I've been wanting to find some hatching Pilgrim eggs myself, not to mention guineas. Probably should expand the coop before I go doing that, though...hehe.

My babies spent their first night out! They are about 6 weeks, fully feathered, and I didn't use a heat lamp! They're good though! Curious as ever! Crossing fingers that our weather doesn't get much worse because I'd like them to stay out there!

Hey guys, I have a bunch of extra small/medium/pullet sized eating eggs for free, could pick up during working hours in Mansfield, Ohio if anybody in the area wants some, I don't sell eggs, am just running out of things to do with them and am starting to feel bad feeding them back to the chickens and dogs.
