OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I need help(not THAT kind, your members here too you know!). I have 2 legbar hens and lost my roo to a rail on the roost impailing him when it let go last week.
I also have about 6 French black Marans hens 2 splash a white and a few other Marans hens. The black roo from Greenfire eggs was lost to infection from a fight, in November. I need quality replacement Roos. I'd like to barter, My proposal is one dozen chicks after he's had 2 weeks with his girls. Obviously, I'd like birds from Ohio. I'm between Cedar Point and Cleveland. I am going to Meyers hatchery next week for equipment I need, so a meet up is possible. I'd pay to ship the first batch of chicks from your roo. You could have another dozen after I have time to collect and hatch a batch for myself, but then shipping would be up to you.
Does this seem like a good deal to anyone? If so, let me know. I know someone out there has to have healthy well red extras. This would be a chance to get cross breeding into a line.

Also, if anyone is looking for a few chicks to raise, I've got 2 incubators going. They are mostly cross bred brown egg laying hens to either the legbar roo, or a dark brama roo. So you'll get brown and olive egg layers. I ask $2 per chick.

You can have my roo for free, no trading necessary, but he is no fancy breed. He is a white leghorn (to the best of my knowledge) and he hates me and I have plenty of scars to show for it. We only want hens because we don't want to raise chicks. He takes great care of his hens, especially his favorite hen, but that makes him pretty ornery. I cannot bring him, though, and I live a bit west of Toledo, a long drive from Cleveland.
*just realized that is his pic as my avatar, lol.

I appreciate the offer. I was able to get a sapphire roo and a welsummer roo yesterday. I at least have a dark egger and a blue its. I wish you the best finding a home for your boy. Perhaps another Ohioan here will help you out.

That's an easier problem to solve than you might expect. It requires 3 new, covered trash cans. You keep one pair of gloves and boots in each. You faithfully change before going into first coop, after leaving first coop, before going into 2nd coop, and after leaving 2nd coop. You must use 2 separate paths going and coming, and not cross over. I had the Dept of Ag vet to my place this past summer. He was impressed at my bio security practices, with shoe changing and sanitizing. I only need to sanitize at the start and end, but not between. The pair at each coop is only ever in that particular coop. In winter I have a detached, heated garage I use to start and end. If the fumes weren't so bad, *I* might use a tray of gasoline outside to step in/out of. It won't freeze til -20. It would have to be kept covered to prevent evaporation...

Another idea might be hand sanitizer gel. The gallon jug I keep outside my coop for hands is not freezing. It was at single digits that s morning too.

But I personally feel keeping the boots and gloves to each coop is more effective. I can leave crocs outside the house, put on boots, do chores, then come back and just change back into crocs and sanitize the original pair of cheap Wally World boots I originally started with.

Good luck. I couldn't find your post explaining why you were sanitizing to start with.

I thinking of bird flu prevention just in case. Thank you for the ideas. We have a serious coon population here and cannot have any trash cans out. I could try 5 gal. buckets if I can find ones with good closing lids perhaps. when we built new coop all feed, etc was moved into it so that may go back to the garage. I just trying to figure out a game plan in case the flu speads.

I use the metal cans. Lids fit tight and coons can't eat through them. Got them at Marcs for $5/ea. I have woods behind my house and coons are serious. I went online and looked up legal ways to eliminate them. I do it every spring now.

My 2 coops are 30ft apart, what i was wondering is if both coops are in lockdown how I can try to prevent any contamination from my boots from one to the other in freezing temps. I have one pen for injured or sick birds but it is in my larger coop. Waiting to see how far the flu spreads before I order chicks.
Now I am a big believer in bio security. I never wear boots that I use in my coops anywhere off the property. Always go straight in the house and change clothes(and usually shower) when coming back from a show, swap.. I don't allow most people in my coops. Those I do I request to wear clothes that have not been in their coops and step into a shallow pan of Clorox when the get out of their vehicle.

That being said, I don't think walking between your own coops on your property is that big a risk, unless you have flocks of wild waterfowl waddling between your coops

Hello Ohioans I was wondering if anyone in southern ohio is on here and has White leghorn rooster they would part with.. I mean real far south in ohio im in Lawrence county. also does anyone have Exchequer Leghorns? hatching eggs, pairs , trios?

Just a word of advise, if you are looking for better quality birds and are talking to breeders about getting breeding stock, it would be in your best interest to learn the terminology. Calling a bird a roo usually indicates a novice. Many old time breeders will be hesitant to pass on the results of their many years of hard work to beginners.

For what it's worth.....

A rooster is a male chicken over a year old and a lot of people call them roos. It's just short for rooster. Personally I don't like the term but it's no big deal.

Wish I was closer! I have a white leghorn rooster who I would love to give to a good home, he is 2 yrs old and takes good care of his hens. But he hates me, lol, and we really don't need a rooster as we don't want to hatch chicks. If you have a way to get him from just west of Toledo then he's yours. That is him as my avatar photo.
